The speakers inside desktop computers (if it has one) are very small and do not produce a reasonable volume.
I suggest you purchase a powered stereo speakers and connect it to the audio out connector on the desktop computer. Powered speakers have better sound quality and adjustable volume controls as well as bass and treble controls.

Depends on your make of laptop, Dell, Asus ETC.
On the site you will find downloads and support.
Click on this, locate your laptop madel and then your O/S and download the audio drivers you want.
If you are running XP on an old laptop [as I do for my work]
I have found the processor and ram are working at their limit to run XP and do not run the sound system.
