Question about Dishwashers

Kenmore garbage disposal

When I turn on my garbage disposal I hear a humming noise coming from the motor. I turned it off, pushed reset button but hear the same thing. Earlier this week I did hear like something was in there but everytime I put my hand in there, I felt nothing blocking the way.
Recently, it won't start. I have tried to find something lodging, but haven't felt anything. I even filled up kitchen sink with water and plunged thinking that if something is lodged it would be dislodged, but no luck.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I had great luck and saved much money coming here and being able to fix my front load washer. Thanks!

I have the same problem, but I think it's more than just a simple jam. I've taken the unit out, turned the hex wrench until it's free both ways, but when I re-install it, it works for a second or two, then stops and hums. It's my opinion that the plate inside is loose. I have repair parts that came with the unit (when I bought the house) is there a way to take it apart? I can't seem to get into the guts of it other than the electronics at the bottom.

I have the same problem also and I have also used the key on the bottom and the blade inside rotates freely. So I KNOW FOR A FACT, that nothing is jamming it. So does anyone else have a better suggestion than the answer given?

aehess' solution was spot on! Unplugged the unit and removed the offending jam (a small teaspoon). After plugging back in, disposal ran but made a horrendous noise: one of the grinding teeth was loose. Stuck a carrot in and ran again; noise quickly died and everything works beautifully again.

Most Kenmore garbage disposals are made by In sink erator. There should be a hex wrench hanging under the sink. This fits into the hole in the bottom. this allows you to turn it by hand to free the jam. Go to Home Depot or something like it and buy one. If this is another brand take a broom stick and stick it in and try to turn the grinder plate. When you get it to turn freely. reach in and see if you can feel anything. Remove if present. Once the grinder plat turns freely it should start. (Use reset button if needed)

I have the same problem. I took the unit apart and it appreas that there was a screw in the basket at one time that has come loose and is now missing. The basket (wall) of the disposal has a seam in it that is secured by this screw. Even if you could match up the screw you would probably have to take apart most of the disposal.

Solve will not drain problem

Disconnect the drain hose from your garbage disposal and see if it will drain into a bucket. If it does, how is the flow? Is it just a trickle or a good flow? If it's a good flow, then you have an obstruction in your garbage disposal. If it's a new garbage disposal, did you (or your installer) remember to knock out the plug that's at the end of that drain port???

Water wont drain

If the water in your dishwasher does not spray or drain properly, there are a number of things you can do. Start by giving your dishwasher a thorough cleaning and see if that helps. See How to clean a dishwasher for step-by-step instructions.

Next, consult the owner's manual for simple instructions on how to access and clean your dishwasher's filter.

Look where the dishwasher drain hose snakes through from one cabinet to the other. Does the hose look flattened or kinked? Do you see any sharp bends? If so, straighten out the hose with your hands and manipulate it so that it regains its rounded shape.

If your dishwasher drains through the garbage disposal, try running the garbage disposal for a bit to process and clear any food.

Does your dishwasher spray your dishes, but it does not advance to the next stage and drain the dirty water? The timer controls the start of the draining process. You may need an entirely new timer or a new motor for the timer. Repair service is recommended.

If you hear a humming or grinding noise, that's an indication that bits of glass, broken dish pieces, beans or seeds may be caught in the pump impeller.

For more troubleshooting steps and solutions, see Dishwasher not draining. I hope this helps!

Garbage disposal is not turning only making noise as if I was stuck

Hi. It is probably stuck. There is a hole in the bottom center of the disposal that you put a disposal wrench into and you can turn it manually (you can get these at a hardware store if you don't have the one that came with it). Often you can get it moving and then look inside the disposal after you unplug it and see if you can find anything blocking the grinder plate. Sometimes it can be very small so look carefully. If you find something get needle nose pliers and try to get it out. Don't worry about damaging the disposal, they are tough. Also check the reset button on the bottom of the disposal (it is usually red and pops down if the disposal is stuck) press it up if it is down and you should hear a little click. If the button is not down then there is likely a jam in the unit. Sometimes they do rust shut if they are not run very often and do not have stainless steel components. Hope this helps, good luck.

Garbage disposal hum

Hi, Hit the reset again. It sounds like the cutter is lacked up some way. Try using a long wooden spoon ar something simular and see if you ca free up the cutter. If the cutter is free and it still will not work, you will probably need a new disposal. If you are getting no noise after you hit the reset, chack your breakers to make sure there is power to the unit. I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Garbage disposal (water won't drain out of sink standing water)

There should be an overload button somewhere on the bottom of the disposal motor. This is to prevent the motor from trying to run if the chopping blades are jammed, otherwise the motor would burn up.

First, try to move the blades with something like a broom handle. Using a flashlight you should be able to see the blades. there's probably three of them. try to make sure each one can move even a little bit.

Next, with the disposal switch in the off position, find the overload button and push it in, Then turn on the disposal switch and see if it runs. If the overload button trips off again, repeat the above steps until the blades can turn.

Let me know how this goes. Loringh
