This is a very common probem on all projection TV sets. Not just sony. Your convergence IC chips and related parts have failed due to normal wear and tear. One common symptom when this occurs is your TV will look 3D and convergence won't adjust correctly. A repair shop will charge around 250 - 400 for the fix. Or you can get the parts and do it yourself. You can get complete parts and instructions from sites like www.TvRepairKits.com or if you know how to do these repairs you can gogole the parts and forgo the instructions.

Hope this helps a bit,

Convergence on a Philips 51pw9303 rear projection TV

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem. Doing so will only make things worse. The blog does however show you how to fix other common problems with these sets.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Convergence

Hello,
This is a sign that the amplifiers are on the verge of going out since it is able to exert partial control over the CRTs. I would suggest that you try manual convergence, follow the direction in the schematic diagram on how to do this. If this does not work then I would suggest either changing out the convergence amplifiers and all of  their biasing resistors, or having a qualified TV repair shop do the job for you.
I hope this helps,
Thank you,

Colors are horribly misaligned... Do not have manual convergence...

Have you entered "Mute-> 1 -> 8 -> 3" to get to the remote convergence menu? There you can manipulate each color, null convergence, load last saved and make corrections. From this menu you should be able to determine if one or more convergence failures have occured.
