You can try different antivirus like AVG, NOD32, or kaspersky, but if you really want to erase it then back up all of your data and then reformat your HD using the Windows Vista Installation disk.Or better delete the partition and then recreate it,this will 110% get rid of that virus. You may want to use a anti spyware utility like ad-aware this can also get rid most spyware/trojan out their.

  • if you cannot delete, then just quarantine. but if you scan again but still there are several viruses detected, you may have a replicating worm on your PC
  • replace norton, try kaspersky anti-virus or bit defender

Hi,
If you use another anti virus/spy program like Norton Antivirus which i suspect you are as you are using Norton Internet Security then you may not need Windows Defender running at all. If you think that Windows Defender is the culprit stopping your Canon application from running then why don't you stop Defender from running.
Open the Windows Defender program, click on Tools->Options, select Administrator Options, and uncheck the "Use Windows Defender box". Confirm that you do indeed want to do this, click Close.
Restart your computer and try running the Canon application to see if it has helped.
If it has then all's well, if you want to run Windows Defender again just follow the above steps and re-check the "Use Windows Defender" box again.
If this does not work please post back.

Good luck.

How to disable Windows Defender

On your own head be it, Open w/defender then goto TOOLS - OPTIONS & uncheck all the boxes.
Then goto w/Firewall and ensure defender is not in use there. By disabling defender you are also interfearing with microsoft updates for other programes other than just defender. Remember vista is still a baby and is constantly being updated, new service packs are being created day by day to improve the "ultimate operating system" lol yeah right. I disabled mine last year and had nothing but trouble.firewall wouldnt let things in/out ,internet kept crashing.I eventually had to uninstall the nightmare that is NORTON anti virus. and find a program that would work well along side defender and the one i recomend is AVG. its free, easy and defender loves it.Defender is a major part to the whole windows operating system.I dont think you can fully disable it as you will find out eventually.

I think my norton is downloaded wrong. I have a virus and cannot run norton

Hi mollducks, first things first. If you are using any version of XP turn on windows firewall. Click the start button & open control panel. Open windows firewall & click it to on if it is not on.
Try downloading AVG antivirus software for free at this link:
http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe Than run it. Full system scan.
After you run AVG on you're system use Norton’s remove utility to uninstall any left over files from Norton.
AVG should have caught any virus.
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
If you bought Norton antivirus software for download, go to this Norton site & click support:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/index.jsp
If it was the free download, try again to download it.
Norton should do a quick scan during installation.
You might want to keep AVG. Norton should still install with AVG already installed. You can remove AVG at any time.
Lastly, once you feel there are no virus's in you're system shut down the PC. Unplug the power cord from the PC. Open the case & gently remove you're memory DIMM's. Wait 1 minute & re-install them. Make sure they are correctly connected. Double check all data & power cables are securly connected & close the PC & plug the power cord back in. (By doing this you remove any virus that may be hiding with in you're memory).

Good luck mollducks!
Feel free to ask if there is still an issue with norton after running the above sugestions.

Problems with Norton Anti Virus 2008 Automatic Protection Updates. Taking forever!! I do only have dial up, but never had problems with the 2007 version.

Yeah I had Norton and a lot of the time it would just freeze up on me and I have a pretty fast computer. They put a lot of effort into making it look nice and not as much as they should have with the actual code. Also if that's the only part your having trouble with than it's probably because of your internet connection speed or your computer speed. If you really don't want to get rid of it than you might have to just leave your computer on for like a day while your at work or out somewhere. But what I do now is I just use windows defender which is free and very good with windows and very fast too. It doesn't have quite as many features as Norton like parental controls and non-essentials but it will recognize threats and remove them just as well as Norton if not better. It's free and can be found at the link below. AVG Anti-Virus free edition is also one that has gotten great reviews but I've never actually used it so I only know what I've heard. The second link will go to that.

I wouldn't try to install Norton on a machine I suspected had a virus (or at all really). There is a Norton removal tool on the Symantec website that might be useful, but you still need to get rid of the Trojan. There are a lot of free online virus scanners that should do the job. If you can go online in safe mode that would be best, or you could disable everything on startup using MSConfig.
