How can I connect a Thorens 145 turntable to it?

Your Harman Kardon AVR 85 doesn't have "phono" inputs. That means that you can not connect a turntable to it directly. You will need a "phono preamp" to amplify the very tiny signal from the phono cart enough for the HK receiver to play it. Something like this:

PYLE PRO PP444 Ultra Compact Phono Turntable Preamp

will do it. There are certainly better ones, like:

Turntable with built-in preamp won't play on phono channel on technics sadx950, but fine on CD channel. Is phono channel dead?

A turntable with a built-in preamp should not be connected to the phono input, because the preamp of the receiver or ampifier will be overdriven. The task of a preamp is to amplify the very low level of magnetic cartriges to the high level needed to work a line input and does some equalizing work to the signal. You can check if your turntable has a switch to disable the built in preamp (mostly they are low-end quality), otherwise connect the turntable to a high level input like "Tape", "AUX", "TUNER", "MONITOR", or "CD".

My receiver works fine when I plug my iPod into it, but when I plug my turntable in I can't get any sound. Any idea?

The phono cartridge on your turntable puts out a much lower level signal than your iPod. Back when turntables were popular, all receivers had a special phono input to take care of that. Your modern HK receiver does not have a phono input, so you need to get an external phono preamp. Plug the turntable outputs into the phono preamp inputs, then plug the phono preamp outputs into one of the audio inputs on the HK, like where you connected the iPod.

The sound is really low if i press the aux tape cd phono or vcr the sound is there but really low

Instructions:
Evaluate your current receiver. Take a look at the back-panel connections to make sure you don't have a phono input. In most cases, the phono input will be clearly marked. If the connections are not marked, look for a set of RCA-style inputs with a grounding screw next to them; this is a phono input. If there isn't a phono input on your receiver, see if you have an open set of RCA inputs. If they are all occupied by other equipment, you can disconnect one piece of equipment, buy an A/V switcher or get a new receiver--preferably one with a phono input.
2 Purchase a phono preamp. The voltage output of a turntable is much lower than those of other peripheral devices, including CD players, tape decks and game systems. Although the inputs look the same, connecting a turntable to a standard RCA audio input will result in very faint sound output, if you hear anything at all. The output of your turntable must be amplified to a level of about 150 millivolts (mVs) before it reaches the receiver, so a turntable "pre-amplifier" or phono preamp is necessary.
3. Purchase patch cables. You'll need a set to run from the preamp to your receiver. Measure how long your cables need to be, and purchase accordingly. Resist the temptation to "go cheap," because better-quality cables will provide better sound.
4. Connect the preamp into the system. First plug the preamp into an AC power outlet. Most models have a small AC-to-DC adapter built into the plug. Then connect the cables from the turntable to the preamp, and connect your new patch cables from the preamp to the receiver.
5. Adjust the gain of the phono preamp. Most models have a gain control for fine-tuning. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer and adjust your system accordingly.

Want to know if it is possible to hear a record player through the AUX plug out? since my Yamaha RX-V396 receiver doesn't have a phono plug out

hi,
Only you can hear the record player through the aux of your amp if the record player comes with built in phono preamp. If not you need a phono preamp between the record player and amp or an amp which have a phono input. Phono preamp is available in the open market.
ok

How do I connect a turntable circa 1979 to this reciever? the manual says something about a preamp. I was wondering if this was necessary.

Yup, get a PHONO preamp.

"PHONO" is the only designated connection on an audio device that is literal and exclusive. Nothing but PHONO will work right on it and old-school turntables would require it to preamplify the tiny current produced by a Phono cartridge.

If your unit doesn't have a PHONO connection you will have to get a Phono Preamp to connect between the TT and any Line Level input, like Aux.

No Volume For My Music Hall MMF-5 Turtable

You will need to obtain a phono preamp to connect between the deck and the amplifier. I do not think this turntable is fitted with its own preamp - check the User Guide.

Pioneer a858 amp no sound from phono stage, I bought it from ebay and dont know whether someones connected a line level component to it such as a cd player. and if they had would it kill the phono stage...

Hi Big John

This is a nice reference series amp with a decent phono preamp stage. It is unusual to see a phono stage get damaged in this way.... but Murphy's law tells us "If it can be blown up, then someone will do it". I recommend that you do fix it. First up, perhaps check the settings for the preamp on the rear of the amp(from recollection). Be sure that you have it in moving magnet (mm) mode if you are using a MM cartridge.

Although its been a few years, My recollection is that there is a separate power supply for the phono preamp, with maybe even power regulators on on the actual preamp board. First check would be here to see if both DC rails are present for the phono Preamp stages. Most common failure here is heat stressed cracked/dry solder joints.

You need a good HiFi/Audio tech to have a look at it for you if the problems run deeper than DC supply for the preamp. Good luck. A FixYa rating is a great reward for my time to address your problem. Cheers

robotek
