Sony rear projection tv kp-51ws500 no picture. Standby light blinking red 5 times. TV has sound but no picture. Before the picture went out TV was turning green then red and had curved lines going...

Blinking 5 times is a sign of at least one of the three video tubes overcurrenting, which will eventually shut off the image. It happened with me but with my red tube over-illuminating. The solution is to reduce the drive intensity on the offending tube. Remove the front speaker grill. Behind it you will find a panal with 6 pots, these are drive (brightness) and focus for each of the 3 colors. My fix was to turn down the red intensity to zero and (after a restart) bring it up slightly till the image was acceptable, colorwise. I did have to adjust all 3 intensities to get a decient color balance along with the focus's on all three tubes (the drive intensity adjustments will knock the focus out as you go). I used the auto-adjust patterns to focus on, and you may want to use a stationary image, such as a paused DVD scene or a video game, to focus on. I still haven't found a way to clear the error code, but I learned to ignore it. The result isn't perfect, but it's very acceptable and it'll do for awhile (and it didn't cost anything!). Good Luck.

My Sony KP-57WS500 TV has curved horizontal white lines. You only see them when there is something dark on the screen. Any ideas?

You have 3 CRTs inside of your TV that create image. Blue, Green and Red. Looks like one of them need adjustment due aging.
Remove front grille. Than remove center "shielding" piece held by 4-5 screws. Behind this cover you will find little black plastic box that have 6 rotating buttons on it. Take you time to study them. There is three columns and two rows. Columns represent color, rows - "Focus" or "Screen". You need to locate "Screen" row of three rotating buttons. They will be marked "B', "G", and "R" for colors accordingly. Turn on TV let it warm up and try to figure out witch color is dominating others on your screen. Then carefully turn rotating adjuster counterclockwise using Philips screwdriver. Try to muscle-remember original position of screwdriver so you can turn it back to it.
Eventually you will find the right one, you will see lines dissapear when you reduce voltage and reappear when you turn rotating shaft back. Sometimes more than one have to be adjusted.
Try to have all three color to be present and visible but with no over saturating and no horizontal lines.
Put cover and grill back - and that's should do it!
Regards.
Russ.

Green lines developing about every 6 inches going across horizontally with slight arch on end sony projection tv KP57WS500

This is convergence out ICs failure and will be replaced for correct picture in TV.
Let me know if you can solder parts in circuit board of TV with necessary tools to provide you IC number and store address, or call local TV tech for fix if you are not comfortable with TV repair.
Thanks.

Sony KP-51WS500 projection tv. Screen is green with curved lines

The green picture tube has an internal short. Happened a lot with that model. The tubes are no longer availible. But a reputable company called Video Display will rebuild the tube completely. But the tube must be pulled and shipped to them. Most repair shops would charge around $400 to $500 for the complete job.

Thin red horizontal lines appear when viewing a dark background

Look around this sight the answer is explained here. you hace to take off the front speaker cover and a small panal undder it. you will find six knobs on a small panal. use these to adjust the settings fotr the power and they will remove the lines. You will need to have the tv on and I would sugest a normal size phillips head screwdriver not a power tool.
