Ok. In my opinion the Acer took a static charge.
Try this : Unplug the laptop and remove the battery.
Hold down the power button for one minute.Reboot without the battery.
This worked for one year then it happened again.
It did not work the second time.
You will find that the pcmcia card WILL work.
You can plug in a usb mouse and keyboard to the pcmcia card.
Handicapped yes but you will get access to your Acer.
Mine came back on it's own a few weeks later.
Who knows why....

Try re-installing the version of Windows you run.
Hope that helps.

OK here is a solution I just found after almost a year of struggle with my girlfriends computer and ultimately with mine cause it happened to me too... I tried everything... reinstalling drivers, run different virus tools and different ways to run them (from bootable cd etc.), reinstalling windows many times, run registry cleaners... change the ram, etc. and never I could find a solution... Computers could work fine for a week or 2 but never knowing why... NOW TODAY I GOT IT!!! and I`v tested my solution several times and it works!
JUST TAKE OFF THE LAPTOP`S BATTERY!!! before you boot ur computer. and Voila!
No logical connection here for me but it works! I noticed that cause my battery died and I took it off.... so I did the same on my girlfriend`s laptop took her battery off and her computer booted normaly with no keyboard and mouse slow down and freeze up! Repeated my experience by rebooting with batteries and sure again... was freezzing up... wonder what`s the relation between battery and keyboard-keypad.
