Westell 327W (Versalink)

I have to computers connected to the router via LAN an one via wireless. I can connect to the internet from both with no problem...however I also want to use the router as a link for both computers to share files with one another. I though this would be straightforward but when I used the hp wizard it didn't even list the Westell/Versalink manufacturer and so couldn't automatically provide the LAN set up...hope this is clear. and thanks for any suggestions...PS two comupter run XP and the HP runs Vista.

If so what would I need to do this?

The Westell 327W has known problems with file sharing. Basically, it can't do it without extra lan hardware as a workaround. Google "Westell 327W file sharing" and you'll see all the problems.

You want to setup a peer to peer network using a workgroup. File sharing must be enabled in XP and Vista in order to share files. Temporarily disable the firewalls in Windows when setting up the on the Internet for setting up a Workgroup in XP

Do i need a wireless router if i have westell 6100f

Yes. The Westell 6100f is not a wireless modem, therefore, you will need to get a wireless router to connect wireless computers.

Or if your ISP is Verizon and you want a wireless modem/router, you may contact them and replace the Westell 6100f with a Westell Versalink 327w, or Westell 7500, or an Actiontec.

Hope this helps!

My westell versalink 327W router works when my computer is connected to it but it is not sending out a wireless signal

Try the following:

Check if wireless is enabled on the router.

Check if the wireless switch (if any) on the computer is on.

Check if the SSID broadcast is enabled.

Try a different wireless channel (6 or 11).

Hope this helps!

I have charter internet with a modem and i have a westell 327w wireless router/modem. How can i connect the two modems to work wirelessly?

I think the Westell Router/modem that you have must be the modem for the DSL connection.
Charter is a cable internet service provider.
You can not use 2 modems connected to each other.
You have a charter modem , you can purchase a wireless router only.
That will work.

I have switched to a Westell VersaLink 327W from a older Westell Wirespeed. The Wirespeed communicated via USB and the new Westell communicates via Ethernet. How do I get the computer to see the modem?

If you are using a Westell DSL modem with ethernet connection, then you connect the modem's ethernet port to the computer's network card. This also uses an ethernet cable. Good Luck

Want to use westell 327w as access point only

Yes, you can try to set up your network as follows:

  1. Unplug the second (Westell) router from anything and power it on.
  2. Reset your second router. Press and hold the Reset button on the router for 10-30 seconds. This will return the router to its factory settings and avoid any complications from the set-up you might have had when the router was being used as a primary router
  3. Connect one computer to the router. Do not connect the second router to the first at this time!
  4. Configure the second router at (Check you manual for details. Usually the username is "admin" and the password is either blank or "password".)
  5. Change the LAN IP address of the second router from to a free address within your LAN (see what IP range is used by your first router! If it using the same range ( then should be O.K.). The address you change to ( must not be used by any other device with a static IP address in your network nor should be assigned by the DHCP server your network. A default Linksys router uses itself and the DHCP server assigns
  6. Turn off the DHCP server on the second router. (This is important, otherwise you end up with IP conflicts!)
  7. Save your settings.
  8. Unplug the computer from the second router.
  9. Connect an Ethernet cable from a numbered LAN port of the first router to a numbered LAN port of the second router. Do not use the Internet/WAN port on the second router!
  10. Start up the first router if necessary and reboot the second one as well.
  11. Voila!
The only problem I can see here is that your first router - now in charge of security - does not see your wireless clients as wireless, because they connect via an Ethernet port. Because the second router is connected via a LAN port, it is not using the router functions (DHCP, security, etc.) That might be ok with you - I'm just pointing it out.

If this doesn't work for you, just come back here, leave a comment and we take it from there.

Good luck and thanks for rating!
