    Thanks,

I used plastic shims to keep it open when I went to pry open th other side. It sounded like I was breaking it while prying, but nothing was hurt. Replaced capacitors and it now works.

How do I get to the CAPS on my FPD2185W monitor? I removed all of the screws but I don't see how I get the plastic cover off?

You need small flat blade screw driver or tweezer to separate the front cover from the back cover starting at the bottom edge of the monitor, see some pictures here: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Gateway fpd2185w capacitor fix question

to take solder off you can get some cross wire called DESOLDER this copper wire soaks up the old solder, by heating this new desolder the old solder will jump into it and clear your way. I like the Techspray #3 no-clean model 1822-5f
and its made in the USA!

Dead screen

There are 3 screws at the bottom of the unit. Take those out.
At the bottom get a small screwdriver and slowly start to push inbetween the plastic. there are tabs all around the side of the unit. You have to be careful and push in and it will snap open.
There isnt too much cable for the power switch, so you will have to disconnect the cable. this will allow the rest to open up.

Once you do this, 4 screws hold the LCD in place, remove these. Carefully from the bottom pivot the LCD screen. On the right hand side 4 connectors will need to be unplugged and one main cable on the left had side. Be careful not to damage the socket.

There is a metal enclosuer that has to be removed, once done open the top and remove the power board. There are about 12-14 capacitors that if you replace them. The unit should power up.

How to take apart case fpd2185w

Take something like a credit card and slide it along the seam holding one side apart while trying to pop the clips with the credit card. You will ultimately bend some positioning tabs but nothing critically to the montior.

I have not worked on this model of set. I was thinking along the same lines as you are. I do remember some monitors having hidden tabs under the edge of the cabinet. I had to use a very thin blade to reach the tabs. It was something like a remote control where you have to find the tabs to open it.
