Router issue for a new Compaq Laptop

I need help with figuring which kind of router I need for my laptop. I have High Spped internet at home on my desktop. And my cable company for which my high speed is with, said I needed to get a router. Can you advise me on which one to get? And also does it travel with me or just stay at home for use there?

You will need to check with your cable company as to their requirements. Most have specific routers they will gladly sell you, or you can buy something which meets the requirements, very likely, from some other place for far less money.

Great! Glad to hear it's going to work out! Thank you again for using FixYa! (By the way, I think that is probably a good choice - wireless-n is still on the "new" side, but my experience has been good with it and with Linksys.)

HP Compaq 6720s I cannot enable WLAN

You must start out by narrowing the problem down. Here are some things to try
First reset your router. If this fixes the issue you may need a new router. But it may not be a problem as long as you do not have to reset it often.

Try seeing if another system will connect to your network. If you have a smart phone most of them are able to connect over wifi. If this works then the issue is most likely with your laptop.

Take your system to somewhere with free wifi to see if it is able to connect there. If it is able to connect there then the problem must be with your home network and not your laptop. If it is with your home network then most likely the problem is the router.

If you're Bell sympatico is a wireless modem/router and your laptop has built in wireless on it you just need to connect to the wireless signal of the Bell sympatico then that should be the time you can access internet with the laptop, But if your Bell sympatico is only a plain DSL modem you need to get a wireless router that will share the internet to your laptop and desktop so you can roam in your house with your laptop here is a sample of wireless router Linksys WRT54G.

Hope that helps........

Why won't laptop connect to wireless internet? Wifi is working, another computer in home is fine

are you at home or Starbuck? location matters.
so, the compaq must be setup correctly.
your router broadcasts the SSID name seen by you on all devices, see that on the Compaq (y/n)
then you must pick wep. or wpa, or wpa2 encyption mode.
as set in your router, we cant see inside you router only you can
then set the passphrase to what you router wants.
is this XP, windows
does the wifi chip look ok in device manager?
Is XP infected.? with malware as all are now.

never post about computers lacking what operating system you have, or answers will be wrong, even all answers.

Desktop wont connect to internet but laptop will

Is your cable modem also a wireless router?

From my search on it, it is not a wireless router.

This means you need to attach a hub or a wireless router to your cable modem so that more than one computer can connect to the internet simultaneously.

Go out and buy a wireless router. Connect the wireless router to your cable modem.

Connect your desktop to the wireless router with an ethernet cable.

Then you should have internet on your desktop.

Let me know if this helps. Give me a good rating and vote for me please.

Bought a toshiba satel laptop and want to router it to dell dimen

You don't need a router for the laptop it has a wireless card in it already, buy a router for your home PC and I would buy a linksys with cap 5 network cables and wireless connections so you can use the printer off of the home computer PC. If you have high speed Internet you can request for a router for free with a wireless and cap 5-cable capacity.

How do I get internet on my laptop from my pc not using a cable?

what you would need to get is a wirless router. If you have high speed internet then you can plug the internet modem into the wireless router and then plug your main pc into the router via an ethernet cable and then set up your laptop to pick up the signal wirelessly. If you have dial up internet then you would still need a wireless router but it is a little more complicated. You could hook up the router to your main pc and then set up internet connection sharing so that way your laptop could pick it up wirelessly. hopefully this helps.

Home computer is connected but cannot get laptop to connect

If your router has a password, it needs to be typed into the other laptop, also the router may not be giving out enough IP addresses, so go into the router configuration (usually on the computer that can connect to the internet by typing, or 2.1 or something similar usually ending in .1 , into the address bar (where the www. goes) in internet explorer. Explore those settings a little, be sure to disable anything you see requiring security or and kind of filtering (wether it be IP mac address, etc)

Also, make sure that your laptop can connect with the router in the first place. If it can't then there could be an issue with the laptop, like you could have a wireless N router, and your laptop may only have a wireless A card (which wouldn't usually work).

I hope this helps somewhat.
Stay spicy and happy lappying :)
