Ok a couple things to check here would be a thermocouple or a flame switch depending on the the type of ignition source. If it has a standing (continious) pilot you need to look for a small copper line returning from the pilot source to the gas valve most likley this will be it. The other will be a small copper line returning to a switch with 2 wires on the backside this will be a flame switch. the thermocouple could most likley be purchased from your local hardware store but a flame switch will have to come from the heater manufacturer.

We have a Rinnai R82VF LPG room heater. When you press the gas button and then turn the temperature control knob to IGN, it lights. When you release the temperature control knob, it springs back to OFF and...

Part of the problem may be, that when you turn the control knob to ignition, you're not holding it in long enough for Thermocouple or Thermopile to thoroughly heat up after the pilot lights. You should hold the bottom down for 30 seconds to a minute, to allow it to heat up. Then, when you slowly release it. If the pilot remains lit, turn the knob to the desire position.

If the above doesn't solve the problem, the Thermocouple or Thermopile (aka Pilot Generator) will need to be replaced.

Hope this helped you. Cheers

Hi there

On these heaters there are a number of safety cut out switches and some are not obvious,
1. If fitted I guess they have changed the thermocouple ( this sits in the pilot flame and connects to the gas valve) if they have changed the gas valve.
2. There is normally a control link to the heater to prevent it starting if the pump is not running or the pressure is too low. This is usually a wire that runs through the pump motor overload(if fitted) and the inlet or outlet water pressure switches ( if both fitted) and then to the time clock (again if fitted) and to the thermosts on the heater.

I hope this helps, but please come back to me if you need more info

Gordon

Unit dosn't seem to bve sensing flame. Clean your flame sensor. Its connected to your pilot light assembly usually. Its a metal rod that sits inside the flame. Could also be bad and need replaced. Hope this helps.

I have a Vulcan Gas wall furnace that is not working. We cannot work out how to light the pilot light. According to the documents we have it is a 26.4MJ model or the 40MJ model

The Quazar manual says....
-Thermostat control knob to 0
-Then press and hold down * (Star) button
-The press the "ignition" button one or more times until the pilot lights
CONTINUE to hold the * button for at least 15 seconds and release slowly making sure the pilot stays lighted.
-If the pilot goes out.. repeats steps above and hold the * button for much longer than 15 seconds and THEN release the * button slowly.

make sure the pilot light stays on. look for a reset button which could be an overheat stat tripped. check to see if the thermostat is set up above the pool temperature.

Canot locate remote swich or instructions how to get water heater pliot lit on 1984 itasca motorhome

look for the gas valve and on the top of it there should be a valve that has either off, pilot, or on. Turn it to pilot and depress the knob. At the same time follow the small tube that comes of the valve and at the end of it is the pilot burner. Hold a match to the pilot burner and when it lites keep on holding the knob down for about 20 seconds. If you can release the valve and the pilot stays lite then you can turn the knob on the gas valve to on.

ES 160000 Endless Summer Patio heater won't stay lit

Bad thermocouple that senses the heat from the pilot light. This would be evident if you lite the pilot while holding the button down for about 30 seconds. If the pilot goes out as you release the button on the gas valve replace the thermocouple.

My hot water heater will not stay lit. What could be the problem and would I be able to fix it?

The thermal couple that senses the heat from the pilot and holds the gas valve in the ready condition must be bad. It is not difficult to replace. Note: When you first lite the pilot flame you must hold the button down for at least 30 seconds before releasing it. Also check the size of the pilot flame that contacts the thermocouple.

I need to know how to light the pilot on my somewhat old water heater. The model is called the challenger 5 the model number 153.331471

On these older gas water heaters there is a gas control with temperature selection and below that is a removable cover. Once you remove the cover you can gain access to the pilot. You must rotate the knob on the top of the control to the pilot position. When in the pilot position, hold the red button down and light the pilot. Continue to hold the button down after the pilot is lit for about one minute. If when you release the red button the pilot goes out, try one more time. If it goes out again after releasing the button your thermocouple is bad and must be replaced. The thermocouple generates a millivolt electrical current that hold the gas valve in the operating condition when the pilot is lit. When the pilot goes out there is no heat to generate this small electrical field.
