Question about GE Dishwashers

3 Answers

Our dishwasher, GE model # GSD4800, installed in Oct.'03,is emitting a bad odor. We do have a GE disposer, but there are no odors or problems with that appliance. I am not sure if the DW drains thru the disposer or not. Is there anything I can do with the DW (such as look for a drain trap, etc.) or do I just call a plumber? Thank you.

There is nothing within the construction of a dishwasher that can cause bad odours.

If your dishwasher smells it can only be the result of food debris left within the appliance because of a poor or faulty house drainage system, incorrect installation of the dishwasher drain hose or some sort of blockage in the drain pump (see Dishwasher Will Not Drain). Less likely is a problem with the water supply.

It is a good idea to run a dishwasher cleaner through the appliance every three months or so. You can find these in most supermarkets, usually in the same area that other dishwasher products are displayed. Make sure that you also clean and wipe the edges of the door and the door seal, especially at the bottom of the door.

Its a normal problem every dishwasher comes to this stage after some period .it is the problem of all the food remains stuck to your unit in the corners for a long time in your unit .its the time for a servicing required for the unit.a plumber is good idea.but a professional service technician will do it in much better way and also provide you the garrantee for near about six months if the same problems presists.and that to not more than his service charge he will charge you.
rate the solution as "FIXYA" if you get helped by it.thank u in advance. wish u success .bye

There is a DW protein cleaner you can get at Walmart that is for f getting rid of food buildup that creates bacteria and odor. Oxyclean has worked well in mine.

Our jenn-Air built in dishwasher smells foul and has since the first time we used it 4 months ago. we have tried bleach, vinegar, finish brand dishwaher cleaner, less soap, cascade soap, running every day,...

We had similar type of problem (as well as residual water always left in bottom) and after pulling out the dishwasher, found that the drainage tube was incorrectly installed by contractor. It was laying on the floor behind it with a only a slight rise to the garbage disposal inlet. I suspect this contributed to sewer odors as well a water back flowing into the dishwasher. I disconnected drainage tube so that it went up 24+" and then connected to garbage disposal (creates a loop that blocks sewer odors and back flow conditions). I also cleared out the filter at bottom of inside the dishwasher. The Use & Care Guide suggested using baking soda in China/Crystal mode for 10 minutes, opening the front door and letting it sit overnight. I repeated that for 3 nights and it did clear up the remaining odor. Don't know if this will help your issue or not. Good luck!

My Ge Dishwasher (bought less than a yr ago....has a terrible odor. Vinegar solves it for a few days but comes back....any way to remove the ''basket'' to see if food is trapped?

Couple things you can check. One is check the drain and where it is connected, Usually into the disposal. If so then remove the hose and give it a good cleaning or re plaice. Sometimes the hose can fill up with small food particles from the dishwasher and remain stuck in there and work its way back into your clean water.
Also try this, run some hot water in your faucet, and smell the water, if your detecting a odor, then you may want to flush out your water heater, may be filled up with excess tank contaminates etc.

Good Luck!
Hope this helps you out.

Odor in dishwasher

Dishwasher must be cleaned on a daily basis.
This will prevent the sediments coming from the
dirt of the dishes to rot, and emit gas (bad odors).
Try this recommendation, and see the results.

Foul odor coming from insinkerator disposal

the only thing that should be used to clean a disposal is "Ice" anything else will / could cause several different problems. Run the water for about 10 seconds, turn the disposal on, put a few handfulls of ice down the drain, when the ice is gone, leave the water running for about 20 seconds. This both cleans the unit and sharpens the blades..

Kenmore Ultra Wash Model 665 Dishwasher

Dishwashers which are properly installed and regularly used won't normally have a problem with bad odors. Check the following: ?Was the drain hose brought in at the top of the cabinet, or down near the floor? it must be 34" from the floor. ?Do you run the unit at least once every 2 days? -Run a cycle with a quart of vinegar to clean the tub and pump. ?Does the disposal tend to back up slightly when the dishwasher drains? Drain may be clogged. -Don't use gel detergent! ?Check your water softener(If so equipped) These can cause foul odors in the water supply if not properly balanced or maintained Good luck!
