Hp pavillion dv4000 keeps shutting off

OverheatingWhen the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed airto do this.

My HP pavillion dv7 keeps shutting down. I'm trying to run a system recovery back to the factory settings. It got up to 51% done and then the laptop shut off. Subsequent attempts at booting it back up...

Be sure that the laptop is plugged in to the power supply before you start! Are you restoring from an image in the machine or a CD or DVD disk?

Either way this takes quite a while and most manufactures warn you that the machine will reboot a few times (I have seen some take 5 reboots) to complete the task, so be patient.

The last part of your question concerns me. If you power cycled the computer (turned it off then on) half way through the process it could be hard crashed. If you have the CD or DVD dish this would not be a big problem but if you are restoring from an image this could be bad. Let us know.

My HP pavillion w XP home OS keeps shutting

I have just tried to fix on of these.
Shuts down for no reason, the more you try and use it,the quicker it shuts down.
I cleaned the fans, refitted the heatsink and CPU, cleared out all virus/malware infections, thought i had fixed it, it ran for 1 hour in safe mode.
I rebooted and it shut down after 5 minutes.
It seems this model is prone to damage to some solder joints after overheating.
You can fix the solder, but it just breaks it again after about 3 months.
You may get it working longer if you use a laptop cooler stand.
My advice is to sell it for spares and get shut

My HP Pavillion slimline won't get out of "start up repair"

Hi,

Re-boot, keep on tapping F8, enter in, choose
"last known good" there, leave to re-boot,

Or
re-boot, F8 again, safe mode this time,
System restore then once booted into safe mode.
restart it.

Regards.
