I had problems attempting to print an envelope recently (the printer is new) and shelved the problem. Now when i attempt to print from works, I can not eradicate the envelope details on the preference screen. It also insists on trying to print from the rear tray rather than the front tray. The feed switch is in the correct position. How do I access the screen which allows me to change preferences.

Re: Printing from PC
Open up your printer properties in windows (for XP it's start->control panel->printers and faxes->right click your printer and click properties). Then go to device settings and the things you want to change should be readily available in this tab.

If the same fault occurs with different printers it is almost certainly caused by the document.
"...second envelope from same document" suggests you are using a mail-merger. Is that right?
What happens if you start again from scratch? Mke a new document and try to print it a a single entity, without using mail merge?
If the paper really is being burnt then there is a fault with the fuser roller temperature control. This would also make a smell.
If this gray sheen is made of toner then this may be the laser unit not putting out enough power. The optics could be dirty.
One thing to try before attempting repair-
Reduce the print density to minimum in the printer advanced settings. This increases the Laser power.
I would recommend you re-orientate your envelope going into the printer by placing it flap up, right flush but with the widest side in fist (or horizontally as per your description). Below is my attempt of the envelope as it should be placed in the paper tray (all in bold characters):
| \ / |
| `...' |
|__/___\__|In your document editor it should be orientated like a normal document.Best luck,Ed(In case the drawing is not very clear, click here an the way to put the envelope IN the aper tray should be like the 1st drawing)
dvlknc The paper thickness lever is not on the front...it is on the floor of the "paper output tray" chamber. It is hard to see without directed light.
Refer to Loading Paper section of the Quick Start Guide....p 15 2 Prepare to load paper (4) Adjust Paper Thickness Lever (See diagram)
Or look at the "User's Guide on-screen manual" as directed by the Note on p. 17
I really had to search to find this lever while attempting to resolve my problem with a badly aligned printing head. I am going to have to buy a new printer. It definitely won't be a Canon due to the rip off cost of print cartridges.
I've found a similar problem to be an issue with a character that is misread by the PCL6 driver. I would uninstall the PCL6 driver (including from the printer server properties) and install the PCL5e driver in its place.
