Question about Dell Inspiron 5160 Notebook

Power adapter My laptop is no longer receiving power via the power adapter and therefore does not charge and shuts down immediately after I turn it on, although it attempts to boot up. The cable becomes extremely hot. Is this as simple as purchasing a new adapter or could there be something more serious going on?

Though you may think the problem is in the motherboard, it is in the adapter. It;s best just to get a new one.

Hi,
With the symptoms you described it seems like the problem is ony limited to the adapter. If you can check with a spare adapter from any dell laptop, that has a smilar connector. It would let us know ,if the problem is limited to the motherboard or the adapter.

Battery won't hold charge

It most likely needs a new battery, but you could try giving the battery a full charge first:

1. Power off the laptop and disconnect the power adapter.
2. Re-seat the battery (remove/reinsert)
3. Reconnect the power adapter and let it charge overnight. (6 hr+)
4. Disconnect the power adapter.
5. Power on the laptop (run under battery power only)

If it doesn't boot up and shuts down immediately, it's probably time to see about a replacement battery.

My laptop is not charging. i plug the power in but still doenst charge. im not sure if its on the power cords or on the laptop please help asap i need my laptop for school :(

Does the laptop work on AC ? Is the battery or cord/charged a replacement? First, try another cord/charger of the EXACT same specs as original. Second, Is the battery good? How old? Over 4 years? Have it tested. Beware of inexpensive aftermarket batteries and cord/chargers. I assume the laptop works on AC? If you unplug the AC , with battery in, the laptop shuts down immediately?

Compaq nx6125 is not charging even though the adapter is working fine and the battery is fine too

Firstly, try the following steps to check the problem:

Turn off laptop.

Unplug AC power adapter.

Remove battery.

Replace AC power adapter.

Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot.

Once logged in to the machine, perform a normal shut down.

Unplug AC power adapter.

Replace battery.

Replace AC power adapter.

Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. The battery should once again be charging as normal.

Water damaged Laptop

Attaching an external keyboard does not help because the keyboard controller is damaged.
I recommend you put your money towards a new laptop as the cost of repair maybe too expensive or beyond repair. Most computer repair shop charge for a quote and may drop this charge if you go ahead with the repair.
If the hard disk is OK then I suggest you remove it from the laptop and insert it into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive for backups and data transfer etc.

Looks like your battery is having a problem. Remove the battery and replace after a couple of hours. If problem remains replace the battery with another to test, if this works, then the problem is with the adapter unit. Get a new one.

POWER IS ON SCREEN IS BLANK. WE USE TO SEE JUST THE ARROW BUT NOW NOTHING!

This can be due to the accumulated static charge is preventing the notebook to power up. Therefore, please run the steps to drain this power. I have included the steps to do so.

Power drain process:

1. Shut the computer down.
2. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery.
3. Press the power button down for about 30-60 seconds.
4. Reconnect the AC adapter and the battery.
5. Restart the computer

Powering down by itself. I have changed all the power options to never turn off but it still will shut down. It doesn't seem to be any time either. It can be 3mins or 30 mins. I do notice that my battery...

Remove the battery, see if it still shuts down. If it does not shut down when the battery is removed, than you can pretty much decide that the battery or the interface between the battery and the main board is the problem. If it still shuts down when there is no battery, and just plugged in via the power adapter, than it's either the power adapter, or the interface with the main board. Also, in "power options", make sure that "enable hibernation", and "standby" are NOT checked.

Acer Aspire 2920 won't turn on, although plugged in with battery

First of all, what I'm about to tell you are general troubleshooting techniques - I make no claim that they will fix what you describe, but they may help lead you to a solution.
  1. Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery
  2. Plug in the AC adapter and attempt to power on the laptop
  3. If it doesn't power on, see #6 below. If it does power on, but doesn't boot the OS, restart - pressing [SPACE] as the first Windows splash screen appears. When prompted, choose to delete the hibernation file and start a system boot.
  4. Shut the system down, disconnect the AC adapter, reinsert the battery, and attempt to power the laptop. If it doesn't start we know, at the very least, there's a battery problem.
  5. Plug in the AC adapter. If it shuts down immediately, or won't power back on after a shutdown. . .
  6. . . .there's a problem with the system board, probably the ciruitry associated with charging the battery.
I hope you 'see the light'. Good Luck!

Toshiba laptop shuts off immediately after it is turned on

Sounds like a power issue, there are a few things that can cause this:
  1. If you are on battery power, your battery is dead, either it's out of juice or the batter can no longer hold a charge. Solution here is to get a new battery
  2. The power adapter is not connecting to the laptop properly and the battery is dead. Solution here would either by a new charger, or if the connector on the laptop is bad, new motherboard.
  3. There is a problem with the motherboard. Solution here is a new motherboard.
