My sister has a 98 Ford Contour. On her way to work battery light came on and then she started losing gauges. We thought Alternator...then battery....then cables. We have replaced all of the above and it still will not work. Someone recommended the computer which we replaced from salvage. And it still will not run. What could it be??
I dont know if yours is a 4 or 6 cyl. On the back of the motor by the firewall there is a 175 amp mega fuse inline on the positive cable comming from the battery. On the 4 cyl it is below the air box center of the back of the motor. On the 6 cyl, it is below the coil pack on the center back of the motor. Be sure to disconnect the negitave battery cable before you attempt this. There is a 3 inch long cover you pop off and you will see it. It takes a 10mm socket to unbolt it. Remove the fuse and ohm it out, if there is no continuity, you have a bad fuse, replace it. I have had 3 people replace their bats and alts ($350 in parts) just to find out it still had the problem. An $8 fuse. Good luck and hope this helps..
Had the mega fuse tested. Thats not the solution. Still trying.
Gona check all ground connections.
I placed the 175 amp mega fuse back on. When I took it off, I noticed that the nut on one side was loose. I cleaned the contacts off with sand paper. Someone prior to me had changed the coil pack and cracked the plastic housing that the mega fuse was in, which made the nut lose, causing a bad connection. I bolted the connections together and wrapped with elictrical tape. that solved my problem. I hope this helps someone else that is experiencing the same problems.

IM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 1998 CONTOUR SVT. tHE ALTERNATOR IS AT 11VOLTS AND IS NOT CHARGING. My LIGHTS ARE DIMMINGA T NIGHT AND MY RADIO SHUTS OFF. wHAT SHOULD I CHECK FIRST BEFORE I WAISTE MY MONEY.
I recently had a problem like this where i replaced my battery and alternator, the alternator would not charge my battery even though both were new. All i did to fix it was replace any and all FUSES that were burnt out. IT WORKED. Try doing that.
