I have a Dell PowerEdge 4400 that I want to boot from USB, is that possible. The SCSI-CD drive died, and I need to boot something else before other things start dying. So I was going to try a USB stick with linux on it. Is this possible? Is it insane? Jim

SOURCE: Can not access bois

It hangs there probably becuase one or more of the drives are dead or are almost there. Check and see the lights on the drives are falshing funny or too long or are yellow. If you find one of them that are that way, pull it out and then reboot.

See if that helps.

SOURCE: PowerEdge 2600 does not boot up ?

you need to set the boot device order. Usually F12.
or you can go to bios with F2 or F10.

your cd-rom is wrong you need the Instalation and Server Management CD. I think it's possible to download this cd at their site.

good luck

The BIOS check can freeze for many reasons.

Can you tell me if this is an existing system that was working fine and then had this problem, or is this a new (or new to you) system?

Can you give more information on what is actually showing on the screen?

Need to reset the password on a Poweredge 4400 server.

You would need to use an admin account, local or network. I can be done via Active Directory or by anybody else that can Manage it via network.

The other option is to use a third party util like Hiren's Boot CD. Lastly is to format. gl

We have a Dell Poweredge 4400 & a Dell Poweredge 2300. Both have amber lights blinking - hard-disk failure indicators. They are using RAID. What do I need to do?

Go into the RAID setup during bootup (not always in the BIOS), but will post somewhere on startup (should say SCSI/SAS Controller card press CTRL + M to enter setup) or similar.

When in the raid setup check to see the status of the drive(s).

Was the machine running and it's just happened etc or are these machines you have obtained and are plain not working?

The hard drive needs to be set as the first SCSI ID device boot device..
The hard drive needs to have the jumper set to SCSI ID 0, the CD and FDD can be set to SCSI ID 1 and SCSI ID 2. No SCSI devices can have the same SCSI ID number unless it is on a different SCS controller.

Boot from non Dell raid controller

Check the Boot Sequence again -- if there are any "SCSI" devices listed, enable them, and make your CD-ROM the "primary" boot-device (so that you can install Windows) and make this "SCSI" device the SECONDARY boot-device, and disable the internal hard-drive, so that it won't be used as a boot-device.

No SCSI Chips found on the adapter

This is a serious problem and you could easily guess wrong and blow away your data.
Good news is that Dell servers have lifetime support. Without a warranty you will have to pay for any parts you need but, if you are lucky, you won't need any. If you do get the part # from Dell and check eBay for it.
Get the Service Tag from the server and call Dell Technical Support.
You can get the phone # from their website.

How to get into the configuration utility to set the nic/ip address

The dell PE server should have a PXE boot menu. You probably need to go into PXE menu and configure, or they need to provide a PXE server so the server can boot from PXE automatically.
