Question about Maytag Washing Machines

1 Answer

My brother is giving me an 11-year old Maytag washer which has sat in his basment for 10 years, unused. Should I expect it to work - or will I need to replace rubber washers which may have dried out due to disuse? And if so, is this something I can do myself? M. Wilson

Thanks for your very detailed advice! Not expecting so quick a response, I called a dealer - who suggested that the transmission oil might have dried out - and that if so, it would be a major repair job. any thoughts on this?

  • if the basement was fairly dry, and the machine is not rusted, then it should work.
  • the hoses on the inside are very thick and durable and should not be cracked or anything.
  • i would use new fill hoses.
  •  just as a precaution you can turn the timer around a couple times to loosen up the contacts in the timer.
  • also let it spin with no water in it for a few minutes, this will help the center seal (long, boring explanation on why).

    • that is funny!

    • the transmission uses 90w gear oil in a sealed aluminum gear case.

    • unless it has about 1/2 gal of oil under the machine then i think your ok.

    • the main thing you should be concerned about is rust.

Frigidaire Front Load Washer FAFW3574K - Is this a good washer, and how long should I expect it to last?

Hi,
There are many things that can facotr into the life of a washer.
How many loads a week do you do?
What are the size of the loads?
What is the quality of the water?

Under many circumstances you can reasonably expect your washer to last 8-10 years.
The factors mentioned above can change that higher or lower depending mostly on your useage..

Washer doesn't stay running. filled with water, then shut down then filled some more and now stuck doing nothing. If push start button if runs for about 5 seconds then shuts off. 10 years old.

For being 10 years old...I'd say R.I.P Neptune. A 10-year-old dryer is going to cost you more in repairs than the cost of a new machine! And even if it is cheap enough to fix, the parts may be no longer available. I used to work at the Harrisburg PA Sears Parts/Service Center...trust me...I know.

I think my Maytag MAV6200AWW washer has a bad tub seal & bearing

if you have had this unit for over 5 years Then it is TOTALLY NOT worth the repair - if it is only a year or 2 old then call MAYTAG and they may offer a parts/labor concession. average life is 5-10 years now as sucky as that is!!

Washer repair

It was manufactured in May 1993. However, depending on the problem, you may seriously consider a repair. The reason I say this is because this is a GOOD Maytag, before they started going downhill, and will probably last another 10 or more years. If you consider fixing it, post the actual problem it's having and I'll let you know what I think.

Belt burnout and transmission gone

It will need a seal and transmission. Expect one and a half to two hours labor. Best bet. Bite the bullet and get another washer as this will probably happen again.

Maytag Centennial: Not starting, maybe lid lock issue? How to install new magnetic lid latch? then is replacing lid lock next or could it be something entirely different? Help, please, and THANK YOU! I have a Maytag Centennial washer MVWC450XW3 that quit working last week. In hindsight, I could see that there had been a history of "stuff" going on with the washer, all around the lid lock;i.e. - last time it worked I had to select a couple of different cycles before it finally started. SO Far, I have tried to get the diagnostic codes but failed a bit at that. I THINK that I was getting an F5E1 error. I was however at least able to access the diagnostic menu, and notice TWO things: No matter what, the Lid Locked LED never comes on, ever. Next thing I notice is when I do a short cycle diagnostically, it never agitates or spins. It fills various temp water, does not agitate, then it seems to suck the water back out. IN the end, I ordered just the magnetic part of the lid lock (the part that is actually on the lid) because I could see mine was rusted all the way away, but am not too sure how to put it on. Therefore I just put it in the slot where it would go if I had installed it. Incidentally II asked my ma if she had noticed anything going on with the washer and she said No at first but then with prompting (she's 81) allowed that she had indeed noticed something wrong with the lid shutting so she had cleaned out that "little hole"{ very well and oiled it to make sure it was working. So again my two main questions are: How to install the lid latch, do I need to take out all of the screws around the glass? and Should I next move on to buying a lid lock part or could it be something entirely different?
