It can be fixed but probably not at a cost that is inside the worth of such a deck. You are better off getting an older designed unit made with good parts such as a Teac that has been restored by a professional and then be on your way. The cheap plastic decks are made for throw away systems and are not often repaired. I have been doing repairs for about 42 years so I know about these things. If you need a well functioning deck you might want to contact me directly at Skywave Tape Deck Repair in the Chicago area.
This level of machine requires a service Technician with knowledge of the workings of this machine. The typical Technician will adjust it to work but often times it is a mess when they get done. There are two remaining Techs that know their stuff in the US. They are Russ Bachmann at New Jersey Factory Service. Then there is myself at Skywave Tape Deck Repair (Chicago area). Contact me if you need help in Chicago or Russ in the New Jersey or NY area. We both take shipped in units all the time. We both worked for Teac and have been doing the job since the 80's. email@example.com if you need more info on either.
I am currently working on restoring a Dual TG28 RTR tape deck. Let me know what your problem is with your unit and I will tell you if I can repair it. I am located in Northern Virginia - Reston Area. Contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Is it electronic or mechanical? The left channel is the physical outer edge of the tape. It's more sensitive to damage and sloppy contact with the heads. If you can see a wave in light reflected off the tape it's probably shot.
i had the same problem of not opening the cassette doors and not running with my sony tc wr535. After I repaced the belts myself with new ones it did run fine! :-) An original sony(!) rubber belt set for the two decks costed me 23 euroos incl pp.
