Question about Kenmore 24032\24036 Top Load Washer

Do I need to descale or rust treat my Washing Machine?

Hi,

I have a Kenmore top load washing machine that I've had for 6 years that still works as good as the day I bought it. However in the past several months my wife and I have noticed that on our white shirts we are seeing what appears to be rust stains, very small round shaped orange marks that I very hard ro remove.
Could this be rust coming from some area of the drum perhaps? Do we ever have to run a cycle with some kind of descaler solution that handles rust too? It's getting annoying.

Thanks!

Thanks Mike and Lumpy, I looked at both the suggestion you gave and the dryer DOES have a little rust and the washer also has a few holes with what appears to be rust marks.

Thank you guys, I'll be working to remove the rust as suggested.

    Many thanks.

I have a Whirlpool LSQ8243H clothes washer that puts rust stains on all white clothes. I took out the agitator and found lots of rust at and around the bottom of the basket. Rubbed it with steel wool and sprayed it with rust inhibitor and am planning to spray-paint it with enamel paint. However, I suspect that the outside of the basket is rusty too and probably the inside of the main outer tub, which the basket sits in. Even after I paint the inside of the basket, there are holes in the basket so the rust can seep in from that outer environment. I don't plan on taking the basket out. Painting the inside will be a temporary fix at best. Taking the clothes out right away works but we sometimes go to bed or leave with the washer running.

Part cost of the basket alone is $166 and there are probably a bunch of associated parts that should be replaced while I'm at it.

Time for a new washer soon I think.

Are you sure it's coming from your washer? The most common cause I know of for orange circular marks is rust inside the dryer. When forign objects are left inside the dryer they get caught up between the moving part (the drum) and the non-moving part (the front of back panels). The forign object gets caught inbetween and dragged arouns the edge causing the paint to be scraped off over time and leaving exposed metal underneath. That metal will eventually rust. The quick, simple check is look in your dryer. There should be a felt-type peice of material where the drum and the front/ back panels meet. Push the felt back with your finger and shine a light in there. Do you see orange? Did your finger turn orange? This could save you on washer repairs when the problem is not from there. If it is still a washer problem, you will probably need to replace your basket (the tub that holds the water in, the hoses and pump all don't have metal). Replacement of the basket does require a specialty tool. If you are still having troubles, message me back.

  • this is a common problem with aging kenmore washers (leaving coins in your pockets speeds it up).
  •  the basket is metal with a porcelain coating. the porcelain coating wears around the edge of the holes in the basket first, leaving bare metal.
  •  when the washer spins the centrifugal force pushes the clothes against the basket and a little into the holes. this leaves little rust rings on your clothes.
  • lumpy816 is correct in saying that your basket should be replaced. it does require a special tool, and the basket is expensive.
  •  in the mean time try to take the clothes out immediately after the washer stops spinning. and if you get desperate you can clean thee inside of the tub with a rust remover like LCR or a strong toilet bowl cleaner that removes rust.

The tub won't drain and it spins very slowly. I've also noticed, over the last couple years, some oil/rust spots on my clothes. It is a top loading washer that is over 20 years old.

Kenmore top loading washing machine does not clean clothes well.

I would seriously consider getting a newer machine. A brown stain could be rust, or an oil leak. Either way it probably is not worth putting any money into. If this helps, please rate my answer. Thank you.

RUST SPOTS

My 10 year old Kenmore (Whirlpool) top load washer is rusting under the top cover. The entire cover from the bleach dispenser all around is rusted under the lid. Periodically, rust dislodges into the tub and stains whites. You would have to treat the rust under the lid. I decided to try, using "Rust-mort" rust treatment on a rag. The rust would all have to be wetted with the rustmort after some scrubbing with a scuff pad. I have not attempted this yet.
I went to OSH and checked lids on new top load washers. The lip on the cheaper models was not properly coated with paint, and I could feel the rough partially exposed metal, which would rust. The more expensive models had a smooth well coated lip on the underside of the cover. Hope this helps.

Kenmore wash machine will not spin

Eight years is getting kind of old. When the clutch or transmission goes out, it costs more to replace the part than to buy a new washing machine. You'd better plan a shopping trip rather than spring for that $100.

Wasing machine leaves rust spots on clothes.

check the basket of the machine for rust spots on the basket if thats the case the basket should have a 10 year warranty depending on the age marks are either caused from that or the dryer. if its frigidaire the dryer then the front seals probably need to be changed make sure to find out exactly which machine its coming from
