Problem with JVC AV-21meu 21" TV

JVC Multi-voltage CTV AV-21MEU dead

This 21" super-multi CTV came in yesterday and it's dead. It's made to work on 110 or 220v (50 or 60hz) and with all TV systems - NTSC, PAL, Secam, etc. The power supply makes a real light chirp but the set is dead. I replaced the regulator IC (STR-S6707) and checked all the parts I could in the smps but find no bad parts. I unloaded the secondaries but still can't get the power supply to run. I'm measuring 24V DC where the 130v regulated source should be. Another shop tried to fix this set and replaced Q901 in the primary of the smps with an NTE289A (npn) and I'm not ever sure it's a good replacement since I don't know what the original was. I don't have a print and don't think Sams covers this one. Does anyone have notes on this set ? Thanks in advance, Glenn Watkins mailto:bluer @aircor.net

Hi there...

The service manual may still be available from JVC, but it is a bit
expensive (depending on what you think is expensive)...

Most of the time it is the electrolytic caps that give problems in
these supplies.  Sometimes it is a fault in the feedback control for
the swtiching driver.  If you were able to try the electrolytic caps
by substitution or get a hold of a good ESR meter, you most likely
will find all the bad ones...
