I have a 640dors reliance capacity40 water won't stay hot long(electric)

remove the two covers one high and one low and set the temp higher. This time of year with colder water comming in the house the water heater has to work harder to raise the temp of the incomming water. In the summer the incommong water is much warmer. 40 gal is a small water heater and you will only get about 15 gal of hot water with the ice cold water entering the water heater as you use the hot water. You can get a bigger water heater. even better is to go tankless and a have never ending hot water and save money at the same time.

Why is my Rheem water heater making a "hissing" noise?

It is boiling the water. Turn it down. Look on the side and remove the small cover to expose the thermostat Turn it counter clock wise to reduce heated water temp.
There may be two.
After an hour or so test the hot water and see if you can keep your hand in the flow of all hot water. If it
is so hot it will burn you it is still too hot. 170 is hot enough. That is slightly painful and will cook the skin

Our hot water has been getting much more hot than usual - we don't run out of hot water, and the hot doesn't fluctuate between really hot and then cool. We had it set to a lower temp (~125F), so can...

The first thing I would do is to turn the thermostat up and down several times, wait a few mins. and do it again. Then run hot water until element comes on. Let it run for a few mins and then turn it back to lowest setting.
I never really came up with a good reason why this works some times but I always tried to save money for my customers and quite often I was 30 or more miles to supply house and it was a cheap fix.
I think you probably will end up replaceing thermostat like your thinking so good luck. Thank you.

Sounds like a squirrel inside water heater

Check your thremostat setting if it is set to highest position it may be causing some of the noise over heating the water and making the noise. And you can put an insulated jacket on it to maybe help with sound.

Hi! I need to rewire the electrical connection. I'm wondering if a 20amps electric break is enough. Does anyone knows how many amps does it takes set on 125 F?

Hi,
It does not matter what temperature you set it on it will still pull more then 20 amps. You will need to have a 30 amp. breaker and run 10 gauge wire to run a 4500 watt electric hot water heater. When it is on it always will pull the same amount of current no matter what the temp. of the water is or the thermostat setting...

We have a new Rheem 30 gal short water heater. It only seems to put out about 10 gallons of hot water before it starts going cold, any suggestions......

I am assuming that everything was fine and then all of the sudden available hot water usage time dropped.

On a dual heating element hot water heater it can be

1. Internal tank loaded with sediment (drain and purge from lower garden hose fitting)

2. Thermostat or element problem with ONE of the 2 heaters. (Trouble shoot element thermostat)

3. Check Circuit breaker for partial trip of the breaker.
