Marantz PV-5580W Color Problem, Missing Red?

I just recently got a used Marantz PV-5580 television. I transported it to my house in a trailer and connected it to the cable, dvd player, and XBox 360. Everything looked an sounded great.

Three days later the color was off. Everything was green (it looked like everything was in nightvision), and no amount of menu options (ie. contrast, tint, etc) changed the color. After opening the television, it appears all three gun heaters are working properly. It appears that the red is not firing properly; however, the menu options and convergence calibration show red when they are selected.

What can I do to fix this problem?

When I opened the system I saw a lot of Phillips parts, so I think it is safe to say that they are the manufacturer.

Also, there is a box inside the television with six controls that controls the amount
(and possibly focus) of red, green, and blue (two controls each). Adjusting the red
increases the appearance of red, but the color (especially flesh tones)
are still completely off. Almost as if it doesn't add red to the
    "foreground". It looks terrible.

    Thanks for your continued help!

I just talked to Marantz and they told me that the product was manufactured by Phillips and their product number is: PV55800101. What is the likelihood that Phillips will have the service manual?

Convergence is an internal function so you might be lucky.

It sounds a lot like you are missing red due to outboard problems, cables, etc.

I also suggest you find out who actually built that system since I don't think Marantz builds them.

Get the FCC ID number from a label that should be visible somewhere on the back (unless it came from Walmart who buys illegal junk with no ID info) and then go to this website to determine the manufacturer;

http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/help.html

It is probably from one of the major companies so finding info after know which company it is will be necessary.

I can't do more than suggest you look for a forum where this problem is discussed; it might be unique to that model although most sets have similar controls.

    Good luck-

I checked under both model numbers at the best source for electronics service manuals (Sam's Photofacts) but both came up empty.

I think the tremendous proliferaton of models and variants, along with the (as you now know) rebranding of stuff makes it very tough to find service literature that an individual can buy.

It is highly unlikely that either Philips or Marantz will sell you what you need but you can email Sam's to see if anything is in the works.

Make subject=Please add this model to your list.

Include all the model info and both brand names to assist them.

Why did my panasonic PV-9450 eat a a tape?

Hi Melanie -

First, you should keep away from the T-160 tapes as they are thinner and more likely to jam. The T-120 or less sizes are better. Next, use high quality name brand tape - not the off-brands found in the bargain bin.

Do the regular maintenance. All tape is "dirty" (including cassette, 8 track, reel to reel, etc.) and will deposit dirt on the tape heads and "transport" mechanism. Transport consists of capstan and pinch rollers that push / pull the tape in and out of the housing. when dirty, they slip and interfere with the "pick up" of a quality picture from the tape. Use of a quality wet cleaning system at regular intervals (or whenever picture quality deteriorates or tapes jam) is highly recommended. Here are some googled results for wet VHS cleaning systems:

http://www.google.com/search?q=wet+vhs+tape+cleaner&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=sb#channel=sb&q=wet+vhs+tape+cleaner&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&safe=off&tbm=shop

Good luck!

HITACHI MODEL # 53UDX10B has a flashing red light and a buzzing sound

If it was transported likely the set was damaged--one of the three picture tubes used could have been damaged--the flashing light is the set trying to come on and the buzzing is related to whatever is bad.

It needs to be opened and inspected.

The color red wont work on my tv

If Dish is providing signal via the COMPONENT input on the set look for a loose or bad red cable--hint in this case swap red cable to green or blue and if loss of color is now different--bad cable or output connection from the box.

Set (we are fond of saying this) does not know what is hooked so if one color missing and good with DVD etc it is a problem in the hookup.

I got paid triple to go to one house (nearly 80 miles each way) as set was under extended warranty for exactly this issue---red plug (component) coming out of the box was part way out.

Hello Chris.
I would double check the power lead (and fuse if in UK).
Check also the socket is working or try another power socket.

Darkening

use the advanced options page and reset the factor blue and red convergence defaults then do re apply the auto color defaults color at first it seemed very red (which is good because red was the missing factor in the green picture) but after reseting all the color and tints to the normal ranges I then reset the color auto correct again and all seems fine.
