CD RW & DVD driver working off/on

I don't use the external drive very much but am finding that when I do sometimes it works & other times the disc spins around, then stops & doesn't auto start. On searching My Computer the external driver isn't there. Is there anything I can do to fix or is it possbile to but replacement? Is it itme to buy a whole new laptop????
