I am having the exact same problem. We went to the museum, took pictures and when I got home it wouldn't turn on. I charged the battery and put it back into the camera and it still won't turn on.

my camera keeps telling me that the battery is flat and then shuts down - i have 2 batteries - so know that is is definately not the battery that is flat. Something strange is going on. Would appreciate a suggestion to fix :)

Worked great for a year and half then on july 19 with fully charged battery wont turn on...does this camera have excpiration date as I notice everyone here has had the problem within the last month

My 630 is two years old and recently I am having the same problem. I know the batteries I have are functional as my daughter's camera uses the same type and they function fine in her camera. I tried cleaning the contacts in the camera, but the problem continues.

  • kim-wolff Aug 11, 2008

Yep. Same problem here. My camera was working fine with the battery all charged and it went dead in the middle of taking pictures. The lens was even stuck open. I didn't drop it and it did not get wet. Is there a reset button or something? This is so strange.

Same problem, I charged my camera thinking that was the problem but no the battery is fine but still the camera will not turn on. What can I do , my camera is only a year and a half old!

  • Anonymous Sep 18, 2008

Yes I too have this problem with mine. Can view photos taken previouosly but cannot take new photos - battery fully charged.

Same thing. It's a year and a half old. I was using it fine and then it died. I've gotten no satisfactory answer from Canon except to send it in and they'll try to fix it for over $100. Or I can join their Canon loyalty program and get a refurbished one for $150. I don't think I really want to be a loyal Canon user if this is the way they're going to deal with a problem. The guy on the phone at Canon even said, "If it were a malfunction, Canon would have released a service advisory." I said, "You mean, if enough people complain about THE malfunction, Canon would do something about it. It's definitely malfunctioning." Anyway...

I too have had my camera 1 and half years and I took lots of pics my childs Homecoming and the next day the camera would not even turn on. no dropping no wetness nothing . I found this site and was shocked to find several others experiencing same problem. Of course when i wernt to the store I bought it from they just said "Cheaper to buy a new one". I am mad as hell.

  • kristinepa Oct 25, 2008

I have the same problem. My camera is almost 2 years old and it simply won't turn on. I charged the battery thinking that it was dead and nothing. I've been looking for a reset button or something and I'm not having any luck. I was hoping for an easy solution.....don't have the budget for a new camera!

  • burtons2004 Oct 29, 2008

Add me to the list... went to turn it on and it would not respond. Charged the battery, checked with my voltmeter that it is indeed charged... still no life from the camera. Soooo, rather that throw more money at it to fix it, I plan to buy a new camera. My new plan is to never ever again buy another canon. Nikon or Casio here I come. If everyone will do the same, Canon will get what they deserve... a death sentence.

Same thing here. Getting ready to go on vacation tomorrow and thought I'd charge up the batteries and so I did and then tried them in the camera - and it won't turn on. It worked fine the other day and hasn't been dropped or anything....... Augh!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT Happy!

I came online to look for a solution because the exact same thing is happening to my camera. It turns on and the screen is normal for about 1 sec. then gets dark and is completely black. I thought it was my battery too, but even with different batteries it does the same thing. This just started happening this month as well.

The exact same thing happened to me. if anyone finds a solution or contacts the company please post

Well you mentioned that it worked fine yesterday with the battery out of the box. That should tell you that the camera and the battery are both fine. The issue is likely the charger itself. Try recharging it again, and double check that you inserted the batteries correctly, and that any switches (such as for 2 or 4 battery charge) are set in the correct position on the charger. If this doesn't work, take the charger back to the store for exchange/refund as defective.

Very odd that both cameras would stop working at the same time, has someone else abused them?

Removeing the batterys for a while is a good enought reset, check the battery connectors and contact your dealer if they both have warranty you will get them repaired or replaced for free. other than that I can recommend you a repair man if you provide me the city you live in.

Hi there please follow the steps and let me know the result.
1. Ensure batteries are fully charged & clean the battery connector point in side the battery compartment.
2. Look carefully between the lens and the camera body for any sand, dirt or any damaged etc.
3. Try turning the camera with the lens facing down and shake to dislodge anything stuck
4. Try removing batteries and memory card, wait 5 minutes and refit the battery only.

Hello, I purchased a finepix s5700 about 18 months ago. It has worked perfectly until the last few weeks. I can turn the camera on if I hold the playback button and switch on the power, and can scroll...

Your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera and give them a full charge (assuming that you are using rechargeable batteries). This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, it may be time for new batteries, or the camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

My camera wont turn on

1.See what the camera manual suggests.
2. Charge the batteries fully before using them. New ones are often not charged up. They could have been in a warehouse for months.
3. The electrical contacts on your camera, the ones that interface with the batteries, may be a little corroded. If you can access them easily, try cleaning them with the eraser on the end of a pencil. Same with the batteries themselves.
4. If exposed to prolonged high humidity, electrical problems may include not only the power supply, but other electrical switches, such as the reset button., which you cannot address on your own.
5. call the manufacturer

Here are some simple things to try first for a camera that won't power on. They won't work for every case, but they're worth a try:

My Exilim camera!

If this happens allot of the times you have to remove the battery from the camera for 24 hr so the camera's compositors can discharge all the way and not it is not the circuit board. Some time the circuit over loads and has to be discharged because of the polarity the electricity is travailing thought the circuits now I know diodes are suppose to prevent this but it is a common problem. hope this helps.
