Question about Toshiba Satellite A1O A15 A20 A25 A30 A35 A40 A45 Series 15 inch LCD Display- LP150X06 CD-ROM Drive

The hard drive may have crashed?

It was making loud screeching noises so my husband rebooted. It wouldn't load windows xp. It still shows the toshiba satellite a20/a25 screen but that's it...so we tried pressing F8 for safe mode and it wouldn't boot in any of the choices given. Upon trying to reboot again it now says there is an IDE error, insert system disk. So we tried installing the restore disk provided and it won't complete the install.
Do you think the hard drive is dead or is there still any hope? I have tried to get into the bios, but am not sure which button to press on his system...delete works on most. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

do not worry at all. take out the cd and reboot in safe mode by pressing F8 at bootup. Then you can restore your laptop to an earlier date from Start->All progs->Accessories->System->restore. reboot normal this time.

Lost cd-rom for canon pixma-ip 1700 photo printer. Need to reload it after computer crashed. I run on windows.

You said your computer crashed. The BIOS still records the optical drive if it connected with power and a ribbon cable.

Remove the CMOS battery and check to make sure that it reads 3.3 v. If it does, then just go into the BIOS and enable it. Save the changes and reboot.

If it doesn't show up, then either the ribbon cable or power cable came loose. Turn off the computer and make sure that the connections are tight.

If it still doesn't show up, then either the optical drive is not getting power or a signal. It can be either the drive or the cables.

Test it with another optical drive if you have a spare. If it shows up, then it is the drive. If the drive doesn't show up and was tested on another computer, then it is the ribbon or power cable.

Latitude C840 wont reconize optical drive and hard drive in BIOS, had loaded xp on hd did update to sp3 came back to see the progress the laptop had rebooted then the problem came up, tried two other hds...

For the hard drive you might have to go to computer and right click, then go to manage, then disk manage, then rescan disk if not just refresh it. The optical drive would have to be to go through the device manager in the system settings in the control panel and update the drivers.

media test failure means that your boot drive has failed ie your hard drive has failed to boot....could be one of a number of reasons
1 hard drive connection could be loose - try taking out the hard drive and reinstalling it
2 the boot sector on the hard drive is corrupt or damaged - try booting off a windows disk and running chkdsk or fixboot command
3 partition table is corrupt - try booting off windows cd and running chkdsk /p from command prompt
4 Hard drive has failed - if machine is still under warranty return for repair if not install new hard drive and reload op system from recovery disks

Windows 2000 runs best on the s353. I have tried running Windows XP on it, but ran into driver issues (Toshiba never released XP drivers) and there's not enough memory (I also have 256MB).
I doubt it's even possible to install Vista on that computer.

If you're running Windows XP, you could just work with it, you could upgrade the memory, or you could back up all your data, reformat, and install 2000. Note that I do not recommend Windows ME, and that I've had issues running Windows 98 on mine.

If your computer is running an old version of windows but it's an old installation and you've not maintained it, you might just need to run a CCleaner scan, defragment your hard drive, and disable any software that's running in the background and doesn't need to be (but don't disable your antivirus :P)
