The most common source for this squeek is a bad brake. However, you would need a specialty tool to remove it. If you go down to your local parts store, bring your model number. Ask them for a brake, stator, spring for that model and a maytag spring compressor. To replace it, first pull the unit forward and lean the top backwards to about a 45 degree angle (or until it will stay leaning against the wall behind it). Now pull your belt off from the bottom. It will come off the pulleys fairly easily. Next remove the cap on the bottom of the large pulley. Underneath you will see a clip on the very bottom. Work it off with a small flat head screw driver. Now place another screw driver on the bottom of the haft in the middle and let the parts fall down on top of it so they will stay in the proper order. Make sure to use your small flat head to make sure all of the washers have come off. Now, install your brake tool. (the directions come with it) but basically, you remove the pin, loosen the nut, slide the tool over the shaft, re-install the clip and tighten the nut back down until the tub turns freely. Next remove the 6 black 5/16" screws that are on the brake. Once you remove those, loosen the nut once more on your brake tool. Once it is loose enough, remove the clip on your brake tool. Reach up and tilt your tub slightly towards the front. This will let your stator, brake and spring all come out. Remove the cap from the top of the spring you just took out. Add it to the new brake spring and stator and reverse the process. The squeek goes away. Still having troubles? Drop me a note back.

I would imagine that this would be a top load washer is that correct? Yep sure is. I would imagine that the brake package on the bottom of the unit is probably faulty. It could be the stator, the brake pad, or possibly the snubber. The only problem is without a special tool, you wont be able to remove the stator (please do not try to remove without this tool, you can be seriously injured or killed for sure). Unplug the unit, then tilt it back against the wall. Place something under-neith to be sure it doesnt fall on you, then remove the belt off the pump/motor/main pulley. Twist the thrust pulley (center pulley at the trans) back and forth and see if you can hear the squeeking from down below. If you can hear it right there, it could be the brake/pulley/or snubber assm. Let me know what you find out, and if the squeeking is not coming from there, fill me in on if you can see or hear where its coming from. Thanks!!!! Jim

hi tecate.

This can be a few things, either bearing, transmission, drivebelt or motor.
Start with the drive belt. Take it off and see if the drum when rotated makes the same squeak as befor when you apply a little pressure to the drum.
If it does not do it it can be the tension in the belt. Or the belt is gone HERE are drawings and partslist. You can also obtain the parts here

Maytag 3000 washer is squeeking during the wash cycle when the drum changes direction. What can be done to fix this?

there are usually three to four suspension points inside a machine that suspends the basket in the case , these are most usually rubber or springs a good look at them with a strong light and handmirror will show you usualy the cause of one of them making noise , most times its from a latent leak in the drum seal and water/suds are getting to it making it squeak

Hoover 2300L 6.okg boss. Squeaking when agitating back& forth, not when spinning. Is this a bearing problem? & is it replacable. If so, from where in south australia? Or wherever.?

Washing machines don't usually run silently, but in most cases, a squeaking noise that occurs while the washer is agitating the clothing is not normal and signifies a problem. If the noise only happens when the washing is agitating, the problem is likely connected to the motor or your water pressure. Depending on the specific cause, you may feel comfortable fixing it yourself. Otherwise, call a professional.

Other People Are Reading

The Agitator
  • Agitators are located in the center of the drum, or basket, of top-load washing machines. Front loading washing machines do not use agitators -- instead, gravity moves the clothes from the top of the drum to the bottom. Agitators usually consist of a tall cone fitted with arms at the base. The purpose of the agitator is to rotate the clothes and soapy water around the tub to clean the clothes. The agitator itself is not usually the cause of the squeaking noise. It is powered by the drive mechanism, which consists of a motor, clutch and gears.
Motor Problems
  • A repetitive squeaking noise during the agitation cycle may signify a problem with the motor. Specifically, the belt on the motor may be wearing out. Some motors use rubber couplers, which also wear out easily. The belt is necessary for the agitator to turn, but over time, it wears thin, just like the belts in your car's motor. An easy way to test for this problem -- if you're handy -- is to take the belt off the motor and then run it. If the squeaking noise stops, the problem is indeed your belt. Of course, this means your agitator won't move. Replacing the belt should fix the problem.
Water Pressure Issues
  • The tub, or drum, fills with water right before the agitator turns on, and water continues to circulate throughout the washing process. As the tub fills and water circulates, you may hear a squeaking or squealing noise if you have high water pressure. This sound is caused by the force of the water moving through the pipes. To adjust this, turn the knobs on the hot and cold valves on the pipes that go into your washing machine.
Considerations
  • New washing machines may squeak at first as the parts "warm up," according to the GE Appliances website. The noise should disappear after five complete washing cycles have run on the machine. Unbalanced loads, overly heavy loads and loose items in the drum may also cause noise when the agitator comes on, but these things usually do not produce a squeaking sound.

Possible that the grinding noise comes from the drum, irregular movement or broken paddles.
You can try and attempt only if equipped with a fundamental understanding of the working .

Maytag Performa Washer niosy during wash-cycle. Spins OK and without any noise.

It is so common that the washing machine can make terrible noise in many ways and is a common fault. In all occasions it is important that your observation is most important and so is vital to the identification /rectification and solution. If you have noticed that machine is vibrating when it is running then the motor /drum suspension has to be inspected. Since these fittings are located on the underside of the machine it is important that you look for the noise with a good inspection lamp. Manually turn the motor and drum and listen for the noise, if so the motor bearings, the drum agitator shaft and fittings must be checked. Also the suspensions which include the shock absorbers and springs, the body clamps must be checked to be in correct alignment and not changed in position. Tightening of the mounting is also very important. Finally in most cases a drop of OIL or smear of grease on the moving parts cane solve most issues.

GE Profile Harmony Washer has loud squeak when filling

Based on your description, it sounds like the water inlet valve is making noise, since you hear a squeaking noise during the filling of the washer. If it sounds like a constant squeak or squealing noise, i'd say it's caused by either the water inlet valve not being pulled all the way open, or because the water supply shut off valve at the house end isn't open all the way. Try opening the water supply shut off valves all the way open, (check to see that they are).

What is interesting is that the squeaking comes back during the draining of the water. Is this while the tub is spinning or only at the very end of the cycle? Again, it could be the water inlet valve, since the washer will "spray" some fresh water into the washer during the final spin cycle to help remove any soap residue, etc.

The part ins't cheap at around $123.00 for this valve, so unless it's really annoying you to no end, I'd wait for the valve to stop working before getting the repair done, unless you want to do the repair yourself, which isn't difficult, with some basic tools and time.

If you wait and let this go until it fails, you'll notice the water in the tub might not fill all the way for the level set, or the valve will start getting even more as it gets worse.

Here's a drawing that shows your washer and the part I'm talking about.
