Question about Toshiba TW65H80 TV

TW65H80 Convergence IC

We have some serious color distortion (lots of purple and green ghosts) and the lower left side of the image is now warped. We think it's the Convergence IC, but don't know what this part looks like or where to buy a replacement. Any ideas on help here?

Thank you for the prompt response. My wife asked this question, however I am the one who will be making the repair. I am a competent auto mechanic but I have little experience when it comes to soldering small electronics. What I would like to do is replace the whole circuit board but I need to know how to identify the board within the TV and where to find a replacement.

Would it be better if I removed the board and took it to a TV repair shop to have a new convergence IC soldered in? I'd rather not move the whole TV to a repair shop since this unit weighs at least 200 lbs.

I would also prefer not to spend more than a few hundred dollars on this repair since I have found that this TV has very low value.

Any opinions or advise will be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you

The convergence IC is an STK392-110. This is a large black IC attached to a heatsink. First try resoldering the pins on the IC. If that fails to resolve yuor problem. replace the IC. Be sure to use plenty of heatsink compound on the back of the new IC.

Keep us posted.

The bad news is that the convergence board is no longer available. You should be able to locate the board, but no servicer will repair only the board as they would not have any way to test it. There are companies that rebuild boards too.

Check with friends to see if anyone can solder and try that first. Any other option at this point will cost more than you want to spend. The ICs will run you about $25 each or so.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Our Phillips Protjection TV model: 55P9161, picture is very dark, and fuzzy. There are tones of Greens and ghosting. We have followed convergance, and the other tips on the Phillips site but nothing has...

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

This is a convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually charge between $200-$300
