Brother doesn't sell parts to the public, so unless you can find a dealer who will sell it to you(which they are not supposed to do, then you will have to bring it in for repair. Try brotherusa.com

HP Officejet J6400 hinge Broken

Or you can take it apart like I did, see the attached photos and use JB weld but be very careful. I put paper between the moving parts to not put JB weld over every thing. I also practice placing the hinge with a pair of needle nose pliers. To try and get a good feel about this. You will want to scrap off the excess with a small flat head screw driver, on the inside and outsides of the plastic tabs. Let it dry for 24 hours. You will need to cut a piece of the while plastic out to be able to slide the metal hinge pin back into place, I would do this first but I did not think far enough in advanced that way you can slid the pin in to let is dry and the two ends will be in perfect alignment. Ideally you would want to replace the hing but I could not figure how to get the front right white lower cover off to get to the one screw that is holding on the black top piece to be able to figure out how to remove the hing assembly completely and go to a local printer repair shop and get the new hinge if HP still sells the part and it is not $100.

I took the photos with my 4S so I am not going to re-size them to 200K because you wont be able to see anything.

Hope this helps.

Hinge is broken on my lexmark X6500 so cover won't close

I have a Lexmark X6570 All In One Wi-Fi model. Just had the problem where I went to print and received an error message saying that the cover was open (when it wasn't). I noticed that the back right hand corner had slightly popped out of place for no apparent reason. Tried to pus it back into place with no luck.

Here's what happened and how to fix it:
There are two plastic hinges at the back of the 6500 series printers that allow the top cover to open for access to the ink cartridge carriage. The lower ends of the hinges are cylindrical shaped and each contains a very stiff steel spring inside. They are designed to prop the cover of the printer up and hold it open when opened. As the plastic material ages, it may weaken and the tension of the internal spring may break the round end of the hinge off. This causes the printer cover to not fully close (even though it may appear so). There is a switch in the main printer body that detects when the top cover it open (even partially), and the printer won't work in this condition.

To fix this, open the top cover and carefully disconnect the 3 wire harnesses and the ribbon cable that run from the top cover to the base of the printer. Then remove the 'paper jam' hatch cover from the back of the printer. There are two phillips screws on the back panel of the pinter (one is located behind the paper jam hatch cover). Remove these screws (they secure the plastic hinges in place). You should now be able to lift the complete top cover/ scanner table assembly off the rest of the printer. Look for a steel spring about 3 inches long...remove this along with the round base of the hinge which may have broken off and remained down inside the printer. Glue this piece back onto the end of the hinge, but leave the spring out. Now reassemble the printer in the reverse order of disassembly and you should be good to go. Note that the top cover or the printer will not stay propped open on it's own with the spring removed, but this is not really an issue.

I am not sure if new replacement hinges are readily available from Lexmark or other sources.

I have tried several times to print a PDF file. The file gets sent to the queue, and then disappears without printing. I would appreciate any help or advice. Thank you.

This most often caused by a postscript error or insufficient memory in the printer.
You could try too see what happens if you instruct acrobat reader to print as image.
This setting is usually found in the printer selection screen under advanced options.
Note this setting is available for windows, for apple I'm not sure this option exists.

Left and righ hinge is broken on my HP officejet 6210, where can I find

I "inherited" a 6210xi because BOTH hinges were broken... poor and weak plastic design that breaks if the operator tries to raise the access past about 40 degrees for access to ink cartridges... of course after the hinges break it doesn't close properly to start again (except with creative taping!). In my pursuit of these parts I found that the lower hinge part (broken) Part#JB6100289A is actually a Samsung part for their SCX-15 printer/scanner. It was also interesting to find several of these 6210xi's for sale on eBay and other places for $10 or less as "broken, parts only" and AMAZINGLY, it was the same broken hinge part that put all of these out of service. Found the HP Part number as RG5-6317-0000N but couldn't find anything except to buy either the Top half of a whole 6210 or the Bottom half for hundreds of $$'s, far more than the WHOLE new working item would be. UED.net listed the part as "non-stocking" at $2.27 each, available Aug 8, 08, but it turned out to be that they are negotiating for access to that parts and VIOLA! a few months later I received SIX hinges at $2.27 each plus shipping. You have to be creative to keep your old stuff working.

How to replace Hinge assembly of Automatic Document Feeder

You can try to get a hinge @ a local authorized brother dealer. I just got mine for 20 bucks, I think that the guy ripped me off, but I needed. Once you get it, it is very easy to replace. 1St, replace the old one by removing the screw in the back of the hinge (back of printer). then pretend that you are lifting the whole automatic feeder up. At this point you will see the right hinge looks likeit it coming out. Don't pull it out completely. Just pull it enough that you can flip the feeder enought so you can uncrew the 3 screw attached to the feeder. Once you remove the broken part, install the new hinge. make sure that you screw hinge first before you slip it down to the bottom hole then screw the hinge to prevent it from moving.
PS: try not to flip the feeder too far back
good luck

Broken hinge

Take the scanner lid off by squeezing the plastic hinges inserted into the back of the cabinet.
Take the top hinge of the cartridge door off with the 2 tork screws holding it, using a small screw driver.
Go to a hardware store & pick up a pair of cabinet hinges no more than 2". (You need to buy a pair because they do not come separate)
Place the new cabinet hinge on the back to the right of the bottom hinge of the base cabinet. Mark holes, drill one top, in the door, & 1 bottom cabinet, pilot holes. Check alignment & insert screws.
Tighten the bottom screws. Leave a little slack in the top screws as they have to be a little off set to close completely. You will only need to open this Cartridge door to change cartriges, so, no sweat.
My cost was under $5 for a pair of brass hinges, & my time, about an hour, taking my time.
It's too bad HP won't supply their offset hinges. They are inexpensive & easy to replace.
I've had my unit for exactly 4 years now, so this fix is a lot cheaper than buying a new one. Besides, I have ink already purchased that does not fit new printers.....go figure....
Aloha.

How to replace broken hinge on ADF on Brother MFC-8820D printer

Look at back of machine and at your new hinge, note the screw hole, if you undo both of those on the back of the printer, entire doc feed will come up and out, BECAREFULL just lift A LITTLE is enough to enable hinge base to be free of sockets (many cables attached) and place doc unit slightly sideways on copy glass to enable yourself access to 3 screws that hold hinge.

Brother MFC-8440 Doc. Cover Open Error Message

I had the same problem, found your site and all of your suggestions. I ordered the same left hinge assembly from Vance Baldwin Electronics
Part #LP2403001 for $11.03, shipping from FL to OK was $9.23 UPS, so less than $20 and my MFC-8440 is working again! I did have difficulty placing the screws without a second pair of hands so have someone help you hold the lid. Make sure you removed the set ***** from at least the back of the left hinge assembly so that you can remove the "case" that holds the springs and sticky white parts. (Yes, I am a girl) :-). My husband will be so suprised when he gets home and sees that it works now because it was on his honey do list this weekend. Also, make sure that you replace the set screws and clean the scanner appropriately before use. I really like this site, it saved me a lot of money this time. Take Care!
