Paper feeder problems from the very beginning. It will not feed, and folds over a corner if it does print and smears the end of the printed paper. Any ideas, I will call Canon, if you do not have a fix.

This error is referring to the ASF assy (Assembly frame which means the paper feed section) This paper sheet feeder assy is a extremley complicated piece and is therefore not really repairable. You will need to take the machine to a canon repairer for a new assy sheet feeder to be fitted. It takes a trained engineer about 2-1/2 hours to fit one as the whole machine has to come apart and the new feeder has to be aligned while fitting. Its a job i always hate having to do. You dont have any other options i am afraid. Srri to bring you such bad news.
Unless both feeder rollers went bad at the same time, which is unlikely, it must have something to do with the paper. It might be slightly damp, or not the correct kind. Try using high quality matte white paper from a brand new pack and see whether it still jams.
it is not directly coming from the head. Probably you are printing your photos without borders. This means that the printer prints slightly beyond he paper. As a consequence is sprays ink on the mechanics and after a while it starts to smear on the back of the paper.
This phenomenon is even mentioned in the printer manual (kind of caution when selecting borderless printing).
There is a menu item in the printer utilities that lets you clean the printer mechanics with a folded paper. I tried this, but it helps only little.
I have the same effect on a pixma IP 4500 , and I live with it.
Dear sir arthur, Paper feed problem is usually caused by broken sheet feeder unit. But if you can print nozzle check pattern successfully it seems that paper cam sensor broken so it cannot reach paper end properly.Rarely, faulty paper feed sensor may cause the same problem. Regards,
Have you still getting the problem, have you done cleaning of Cartridge, its nozzle and Contact strip.. then cleaning of Printer roller or carriage rack.. Do a Service of it or get it done by Technician.
Also check the feeder tray.. to grab paper one by one by printer.. Manually
