Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

Top freezer won't stop running

I have an older top freezer refrigerator and I noticed the other day that it will not stop running. I cleaned the dust off the back and rearranged the stuff in the freezer. It didnt seem to help. I tried turning the thermostat control back and forth and it would shutoff, but then a couple of minutes later it would start running again. Does this mean the coolant is low or is it something else???

Thanks for your help. I think it was the compressor getting weak. The temp wasnt cold enough. Had the Apartment complex replace the fridge.

  • it sounds like the compressor is getting weak, taking more time to build up pressure.
  • keep an eye on the temperature (with a thermometer)
  • i would start shopping for a new refrigerator ASAP.

Top of freezer and refrigerator stops working for a couple of days then starts working again

Clean all the dust and lint accumulation from under the unit, remove the condensation collection pan and clean it, and make sure the bottom fan is running.

I can't emphasize strongly enough how much of an enemy the accumulation of dirt and dust under a refrigerator can be its worst enemy. It can make the refrigerator exhibit symptoms of much more serious problems. Sometimes a good cleaning can have it operating like new with no real 'repairs' whatsoever.

You may end up having to call a repairman, but hey... This is a 'free' fix and if doesn't work, all you're out is your time. And you'd be surprised at the multitude of problems the accumulation of dirt and lint (or non-working fans) can cause.

Good Luck. Hope this helps.

Fridge will not cool properly

You may have a dust build up on the condenser coil. You may notice the jam of the ref door being very warm. This is an indication of a dirty coil (located under your ref) that just needs to be cleaned or your fan motor in the back of the unit may have failed and stopped turning.

Older subzero side by side not cooling

At sixteen years old it is almost through its life span. A change in ambient temperatures will change internal system pressures. Make sure the condenser is cleaned well. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean off the condenser, then blow it out with compressed air. Even though a condenser looks clean on its surface fins there may be dust down in between the fins.
