Toshiba 320GB MK3265GSX SATA hard drive don't recognize by the bios... it's broken... help me recover my files

If BIOS doesn't detect it either the data/power cables are bad or not making a good connection, or the drive has failed.

Blue light on runs, but pc doesnt see it

Has the drive been used previously? Possibly on a Mac or Linux machine? If so then Windows may be having a problem recognizing the file system the drive is set up with. Try connecting the drive to the PC, turning off your PC and then turning it on while tapping the Del key. This should bring you to the BIOS where you can have a look around (mostly in the Boot menu) to see if the BIOS can recognize the drive. If the BIOS can see it but Windows can't, it's most likely a problem with the file system. Bring the drive to any Windows or Linux based machine (or make your own Ubuntu Live CD and do it yourself) and reformat the drive to either FAT32 or NTFS (NTFS being the best choice). Windows should have no problem picking up the drive then.

If the BIOS doesn't recognize the drive, bring the drive to another computer and test there. It may be that the power is going to the drive but either not enough to start the hard drive spinning, or that the drive itself has failed. Either way, it's pretty much dead.

Don't forget that most external hard drives and the likes come with pretty long warranties (lifetime in some cases) and you should always contact the manufacturer to find out if it can be replaced or repaired free of charge.

My Barracuda 7200.7 200GB drive failed. The computer does not recognize that the drive is attached. I can hear it power up but then nothing. No clicking or other noise indicating that the heads are moving....

Try connecting it to another sata port on ypu motherboard or try using another sata cable. If still same problem go to the BIOS if that drive is detected properly. You should see there the model number and the capacity, if its not there then the hard drive has a problem, have it replaced.

My hard drive which is model dk23eb-40 is not being recognized by my computer at all. not in the bios or nothing. is there something else i can do or is it gone completely

If you can try it in another computer, as the _only_ device connected to the "data" ribbon-cable, and it still fails to be detected, then it's gone, gone, gone.

Hello,

all you have to do is to simply set the jumper at the back of he hard disk, beside where the IDE cable and power enter into the hard disk.

Just keep setting till you put at the right position where the system recognizes it.

There is nothing wrong with your PC and hard drive, just set the jumper of the Hard disk and that should be all.

Take care.

Go to BIOS (Press DEL or F2 to enter BIOS). Check if the Power state is in S1. Ensure that USB setting is in Hi-Speed.
Restart the computer and try using the device. this should fix. Let us know the result.
