I suspect your cable modem is looking for the MAC address of your compaq's NIC. if you run IPCONFIG /ALL on the Compaq (Start run, cmd <enter> then IPCONFIG /ALL <enter> , you can get the 12 digit MAC address.

In the router setup, there should be an option to CLONE MAC address, put in the MAC address of the COMPAQ. Then release and renew the IP address in the Router from the cable modem. The router should then get a valid IP address from the cableand you should be able to connect both systems to the router and surf.

Connect my emachine to wireless

If you already have a wireless router set up for your laptop and you're just looking for an adapter to allow your desktop to connect to it then just go here and get this little adapter or one like it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833315091

It's very small, easy to install, and works great. You just have to plug it into one of your USB ports, and if your operating system is Windows XP or later it should even automatically install all the drivers for it. It will come with a drivers disk as well if you need it.

hello, the reason internet is not working on this newly installed windows XP is becuase (most likely)you are missing network card drivers.
To verify right click "My Computer", and select "Properties", then click on "Hardware" tab and click on "Device manager" here you will see anything that is missing drivers has a yellow Excalmation mark (!).
NOw that you have checked which items are missing drivers:-
First thing you should do is open the link below on the laptop with the internet.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3300335

Download Nvidia LAN drivers on your laptop and find a way to bring it to your HP desktop, copy to flash drive, burn it on cd etc...
Install LAN drivers on your HP computer, restart your computer and test internet.
If internet is now working visit the link above again from HP computer and download all the drivers that are missing in device manager, install them one at a time.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you still have problems or get stuck at something.

Kind regards,

Amar Sondhi

Hi my friend has a belkin g802.11g router for his laptp and only 3 of the lights are on the etreme right isnt working his pc is telling him he has connection to the internet but its not letting him connect...

the router must be connected properly to the pc and set up to function properly first. Usually the pc is plugged into port 1 while the internet connection is plugged into the main "Green" labeled port which is spaced further away than the other 4 ports. If that's done properly then you have a few software issues depending on the ISP he is using. For instance, Road Runner doesn't really care what you use, however Yahoo DSL has issues that must be configured to make the modem communicate properly with the router. Does he see the wireless network with his laptop? Is he using 2 pc's, one hard wired to router and a laptop or just the laptop? If he's using just a laptop then you have a specific setup procedure that must be followed, contact the mfg of the modem, belkin's usually pretty good with walking you through the setup.

I have a Compaq PC with Windows XP and the flat I've moved into has wireless broadband - how do I connect to it?

You can use a wireless network to share Internet access, files, printers, and more. Or you can use it to surf the Web while you're sitting on your couch or in your yard. Plus, it's easier to install than you think.
There are 4 steps to creating a wireless network:
1.
Choose your wireless equipment
2.
Connect your wireless router
3.
Configure your wireless router
4.
Connect your computers
For Windows XP users, Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not required for wireless networking, but it does make things much easier. Service Pack 2 also helps protect you against hackers, worms, and other Internet intruders.

Connect your computers
If your computer does not have wireless network support built in, plug your network adapter into your USB port, and place the antenna on top of your computer (in the case of a desktop computer), or insert the network adapter into an empty PC card slot (in the case of a laptop). Windows XP will automatically detect the new adapter, and may prompt you to insert the CD that came with your adapter. The on-screen instructions will guide you through the configuration process.
Note: The steps below only apply if you're using Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you're running Windows XP and you don't have Service Pack 2 yet, plug your computer into your wireless router and download and install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Windows XP should show an icon with a notification that says it has found a wireless network.
wireless_connected.gifFollow these steps to connect your computer to your wireless network:
1.
Right-click the wireless network icon in the lower-right corner of your screen, and then click View Available Wireless Networks. If you run into any problems, consult the documentation that came with your network adapter. Don't be afraid to call their tech support.
2.
The Wireless Network Connection window should appear and you should see your wireless network listed with the network name you chose. If you don't see your network, click Refresh network list in the upper-left corner. Click your network, and then click Connect in the lower-right corner.
wireless_chooseconnection.gif 3.
Windows XP prompts you to enter a key. Type the encryption key that you wrote down earlier in both the Network key and Confirm network key boxes, and then click Connect.
4.
Windows XP will show its progress as it connects to your network. After you're connected, you can now close the Wireless Network Connection window. You're done.
Note: If the Wireless Network Connection window continues to show Acquiring Network Address, you may have mistyped the encryption key.
