Clarification Request

This is a link to tech specs of the ipod classic...

http://support.apple.com/kb/SP15

The advertised video profiles are way above what is stated here for video bitrates. Are you getting this information from somewhere else or is it empirical? I have had the issue even with videos purchased off of iTunes. I have noticed that sometimes resyncing seems to fix the issue so it maybe related to the transfer of files between itunes and the ipod. Although the latest version of itunes seems to work better than the version current in June. Does anyone know where to get the release notes for itunes?

-   160 GB chrome Classic, problem the same, playback stops at a certain point in a movie and returns to movie menu. Always happens at the same places in the same movies; usually these are 20 or so minutes apart. Selecting the video again starts playback over from the beginning. Only started to see the problem recently, and it could be coincidence, but it seems to happen only on movies I've added recently from backup DVD's using AVS brand video conversion, specifically the VTS_01_0.IFO file for transfer. Have tried changing file extensions from m4v to mp4, plays either way, but no effect on problem that i can see. Must scan back past the error point to resume playback or error will happen again. Never happens on short films ten minutes or less. iPod bug, copy protection error? -   McKim

This is a response to all thoes with the problem of ipod videos stopping randomly and acting as though the video had ended. (please excuse any spelling or grammer errors that may be involved in this post)
I have reciently noticed alot of topics on this and other sites that had issues with the video on the ipod. After syncing a video that is a proper mp4 format, it seemed to work fine, it even began to play but after one or less minutes the video would stop playing and act as though it was finished and had reached it's end. It would happen at the exact same point every time and you could fast foreward past it and it would continue playing, only to find the problem in another spot a few minutes later. I had this problem with each and every video that I synced and could not play any of them, this problem irritated me and as I found out alot of others who had the same problem. I could find no solution that had yet been found after searching many sites that involve help with the ipod. After some research I soon found and solved my problem. The problem is that the ipod will only accept videos that have a video bitrate of less than 768 kbps. This is what causes our problem as stated above. This would mean that 512kbps would be the ideal for watching videos. (every video that had a video bitrate of 512 kbps (or lower) always worked and had no issues whatsoever) Only a few 768 kbps videos will work and some of them will not. So to fix the problem you need to find somthing that will reformat your video to a video bitrate of 512 kbps or lower. The current one that I use is called "Jodix free ipod video converter", this will change your favorite non mp4 videos into mp4s and just be sure to set the video bitrate on the converter to 512kbps or lower. Also use this program to change your already mp4s into a video bitrate of 512kbps or lower. (Just be sure to set the video bitrate to 512kbps or less by sliding the bar to lower quality for video.) This should make your videos continue playing for full enjoyment of your ipod. (with video) Please respond with any and all questions. Thank you for your time, I hope this is useful and solves the problem. Sorry for being long winded with my answers, I do this to ensure full understanding of my explination. /\/icho.

- Answer to the request for Clarification;

Yes I noticed that also that the advertised bitrates are much higher than my experiments showed (My stated bitrates were empirical) I tested any bitrate that I could find using Jodix, I also used "WinAVI mp4 converter" and it's trial run to test different theroies on what happend with the bitrate problems I was experiencing and the large difference between the conclusion I found multiple times (I double checked this many times and still found 512 kbps to work 100% (13/13) of the time and 768 kbs to work 84.61...% (11/13) of the time and anithing higher woked 0% (0/13) of the time) and the advertised rates. Thus I am unsure of why this appears to be the problem. If you think this to be the problem and wish to try my solution please get back to me with your results, let me know if it solved or didn't solve the problem, if you can find another solution please let me know of that also. I found a site with a very rough sketch (but it is the beast I could find) for the itunes/ipod update release notes for you,

For most iPod owners, include you I guess, are not satisfying with only to play common music and videos with your lovely iPod. While there has been many times I heard that people complaining about the issues that some songs not playing with their iPod touch, more specifically, the iTune plays the music, seems to sync and the album cover shows up, but when trying to play it on iPod, the track doesn't play and the progress bar doesn’t move. Some just say that some certain video files can’t play on their iPod. All the problems could be caused by compatibility issue.
There’s a way out. With the help of additional freeware and shareware apps, it's easy to extend your 'iPod's abilities in more ways.iPod video converter is definitely a good choice . Being powerful but easy to use, it enables you to convert all popular audio and video files, such as AVI, MPEG, MOV, MP4, VOB, DivX, XviD, AAC, AC3, MP3 to MPEc,G 4 and H.264 Video that can be playable on iPod family: iPod Touch, iPod Video Nano and of course the new iPod Classic. it also has excellent video editing ability: crop out unwanted subtitles and unnecessary black bars, trim the video by setting the start time and ending time, customize the effect like saturation, contrast, etc,. you can also capture view from the video and store them as jpg,bmp or png.

iPod video converter is suitable for both novice and expert, you don’t have to have previous experience, and you will find just how powerful this program could be .it’s known for fast conversion speed but without video quality loss. Find more specific tools you need to work with your iPod.

Video playback on the 160g iPod randomly stops for no clear reason, and returns to the episode menu. I can skip past the point where it exits the video and watch the rest of the show, but if I leave it to play, certain shows always exhibit this problem.

I have the same problem. Almost all videos just quit at some point into the video and go back to the menu. Is at random time intervals but always the same spot(s) on a particular video. Apple has already sent me a replacement but I am having the same issue on the replacement as well. Doesn't matter where I get the videos, some have even come from itunes and have the same issue. Please complain to Apple via the product feedback at the following link: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html
