How to check the wireless settings on your Linksys router

Do you need to know the wireless settings configured in your Linksys wireless router? This tip will you do this, I will show you how this can be done.

First, why do we need to know the wireless setting of your router?

Here are a few reasons why we need to know all of these:

  • We need to know the wireless settings if we wan to add a computer to the wireless network that you already have.
  • If we want to add a wireless devices like, wireless gaming adapters for your gaming system like Xbox.
  • You will also need to know the wireless settings of your network if you want your mobiles phones and other gadgets (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad,etc.) to get online through your wireless network.
What are the things we need to verify off of your router setup page? Here they are:
  • SSID - Wireless Network Name
  • Channel
  • Type of Security
  • Security code or password if there is one enabled.
Here are the steps on how this can be done:

  1. In your computer that is connected to the router, open your browser and type or copy and paste this link to the address bar hit return.
  2. A login box will pop-up asking for a user name and password. Just leave the user name field blank and type admin in the password field.
admin is the default password, if you can't login using the default password, you might have likely changed it during the initial configuration of your router.
  3. Once you are in the router Setup page, click on the tab at the top that says Wireless. In this page, you can get the following information.

    • Wireless Network Mode - This setting will allow you to choose if you want different types of wireless connection can be accepted by the router, you can choose B, G or Mixed. I recommend you leave it to Mixed.
    • Wireless Network Name / SSID - This is the field where you can put in the name you want for your network. The name you will set here will the name that your router will be broadcasting. By default your router uses the name "linksys". Imagine if the rest of your neighbors has the same brand of router.
    • Wireless Channel - This is the channel or frequency your router is operating on. This can be changed if you are having intermittent issues with your wireless network.
    • Wireless SSID Broadcast - This is one setting that is worth checking. If this is disabled, your router is still operating but the name of your network will be hidden. It's recommended to leave it enabled.

  4. Then click on the sub-tab under the Wireless tab that says Wireless Security. In this page, you will be able to verify the following information about your wireless network security.

    • Security Mode - By default this is set to Disabled. And these are the common security type used or enabled in a small office, home office netowrk.

    • WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) - If this is the type of security that is enabled in your router, you need to look for the "Default Transmit Key" or "Default Tx Key" this will tell you what key you need to use from the list of keys available. See image below for reference.

    • WPA Personal (WI-FI Protected Access) - if this the security that you will see, you need to take note of the "WPA Shared Key" this is the password for your wireless netowrk. You can change this any time, and it should be a minimum of 8 characters. Note: If you change your password for the wireless, you wireless computer and other wireless devices that were able to connect fine prior to changing the password, may need to be reconfigured or reconnect and use the new password.

I hope that this will help you readers out there. Thank you for dropping by.

How to resolve Intermittent Wireless connection using Linksys routers....

If your problem is with the wireless connectivity on all your wireless computers, there is a possibility that you are experiencing interference. Any device working on a 2.4-GHz frequency would cause reception problems on your wireless adapters. You can help by checking the following factors, all of which can greatly affect your wireless signals:

1. 2.4 GHz interference: Your router may be operating on the same frequency as your cordless telephone system (or even your neighbors), or other nearby equipment. Try to change your router's channel to 1 or 11 (the default is 6) and restart the wireless computers.

To change channel on your router follow the steps below:
a. Log on to the router's web utility ( on your browser). Then put the router password admin and leave the username blank but if you change the router password then type that in.
b. On the wireless section, change the channels from 1 to 11. I suggest you to use channel 1, 6, 9 and 11. Hit Apply or Save Settings.

2. Physical obstructions: Your router or wireless computers may be loosing connectivity because of physical obstacles, including walls and floors. Try to physically move the equipment to different locations to find a better link.
3. Placement of the router: I suggests that you place your router as high off the ground as possible. If placing in a high location, be sure to give leave a distance of 2-feet between the router antenna tips and the ceiling and wall. If your signal goes through multiple floors, try to place the router on the upper-most floor, and up high in the room that it will be placed in.
4. Surroundings: Keep the router away from large metal objects, bodies of water (fish tanks, bathrooms), and any electrical equipment including television sets, microwaves, radios, etc.

If you have enabled the WEP security on your router try the following steps to troubleshoot the problem:

From the wireless computer you are having problem with, if you are using Windows xp make sure the IEEE for the authentication is not enabled. To check this go to Control panel>Network connections>Right click on Wireless network connections then hit the properties button. Click on Wireless networks tab and under the Preferred networks highlight the name of your wireless network then hit the properties button. Click on the Authentication tab and make sure that the Enable IEEE box is not check.

If you don't have WEP security enabled on the router and changing channels didn't help to fix the problem you may try to enable the wireless security on the router. To enable WEP on the router follow the steps below:

1. Open your default browser and enter the following IP address into the address bar: <>
2. When prompted for a username and password type “admin” on password, unless you have previously changed the password of the router, and hit OK. This will bring you to the Setup page of the router.
3. Depending on the firmware of the router. Click on the WEP Key Settings button. Or you can click the Wireless tab and select Wireless Security. Or you can click the Security Tab and select Wireless.
4. From the WEP/Security Settings window, you may enable 64 or 128 bit WEP then enter your Password on the Passphrase field and click on Generate. Make sure to copy the characters on Key 1-4 on a piece of paper before you hit APPLY. You will need this once you enable WEP on the wireless PC’s. Also take note that if you enable 64 or 128 bit on the router, this should be the same WEP level that you will enable on the wireless cards.

If it still doesn't work try to uninstall and reinstall the driver of the wireless adapter. You may try to use the latest driver of the adapter that was available on our website. If you are using Windows xp you don't need to install the WLAN utility for the card, install only the driver.

If it still doesn’t work you try to hard reset the router. If you will reset the router it will turn to the factory default settings of the router and you need to reconfigure it.

To reset the router to factory default 1] Press and hold the reset button for 30 sec., after that 2] Unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for another 30 sec. 3] Then, plug back the power keep holding down the reset button for 30sec., after that 4] Release the reset button. 5] You need to reconfigure the router again and that should correct everything...

If this is a Helpful tip Thumbs Up is appreciated. Thank you

Go to your IP Adress (printed below your router, usually enter the user credentials (commonly admin/password) and go to router security. If this is to complicated or you don't remember credentials, reset the router or tell the neighbors that you will sue them

How will I set up a password on my router to avoid neighbor use my internet?

I would recommend that you connect to the router via a cable to complete the following set up, otherwise you will lose wireless connection during the process and this complicates things and takes longer.

1 Open a web Browser and type in the web address bar and press "Enter".

2 In the newly opened Authentication box type in the user name and password. The default is Username admin Password 1234. Click the OK button.

3 Click the General Setup Button.

4 Click the Wireless Button.

5 Ensure that wireless is enabled at the top of the box and select the security settings option and click next.

6 In the WDS security settings Box set the dropdown to WPA pre-share key.

7 Select WPA (TKIP) and Passphrase

8 enter your phrase in the pre-share key box and click apply

9 when connecting wirelessly you will be asked for your passphrase in order to connect.

You are now secure.

You need to determine your gateway IP address. Click on your network status to determine that. It will most likely be You can open a web browser and go to to get to your router login page. Try admin for your username and leave the password blank.

That should bring you the interface where you can change the wireless security settings to "enabled" and set your password. Let me know if this works for you!

Hi George,

Simply open your Internet browser, in the address line, inset, then:

Do set some security as well, other vice your neighbor will use your network, - and that you don’t want, as you don’t know what and where he go on the internet.

On page 27 in your manual, you find the way to set the wireless settings.

On page 37 in your manual, you find a way to set MAC address settings. Thise settings allow only those MAC addresses as you put in the table.
You find your own MAC address like this:
->Start->run->write cmd and hit enter; a black DOS window open, write ipconfig /all (note the space before /all). Here you find your MAC address – note that there is two cards in your laptop, and the card you want the MAC address for is the wireless card.
