My Gas Oven Will not bake

  • revdodd Oct 17, 2008

My Magic Chef 9475VRV takes forever to heat up. It will take an hour to get up to 200 degrees. How do I fix it?

  • judymcc75 Jan 24, 2009

My ignitor ignites the gas flames, however the oven never reaches the temperature that the digital temperature on the control panel reads. Example...if I turn the oven temp to 500...it only takes a few minutes for the oven to indicate that it's up to temp, when in actuality the temp is 250 at most. The highest it will heat up to is 350...if the temp is set at 550!

In many cases, even if the igniter is glowing, the resistance may not be low enough to turn on the gas valve. The igniter has probably gone bad. ($50.00 to $90.00 for igniter)

Maytag double electric oven. we turn on to bake and would switch to broil then will turn off.

Assuming this is on a gas range, the bake burner ( under the oven floor) and the broil burner ( at the top of the oven) have electric igniters . When switching from bake to broil the broiler goes off due to a defective or broken broil igniter. cheap part to replace ( +-$40.00)

I have kenmore gas oven ignitor glows but will not light

Hello there:
It doesn't bake dot_lineone.gif Bake igniter
When the bake igniter becomes weak or burns out, your oven would not bake. The bake igniter is usually mounted on the oven burner. It's about 1 inch by 4-8 inches (depending on the model), and comes in round or flat styles. If you don't see the igniter glow at all, it's probably burned out. Replace the igniter if found defective. Note: one of the exceptions could be that your oven is set to automatic mode instead of manual. If this is the case, set your oven to manual mode and check again.

If the bake igniter glows red and not bright yellow or white, it is probably because it is too weak. When this happens, the safety valve would not let the gas out into the oven burner. A weak igniter must be replaced.

A faulty igniter is probably the most common cause, however there are others:

-- defective thermostat
-- defective selector switch
-- defective gas safety valve

If you are certain the igniter is ok, it might be a good idea to call a professional appliance technician.

My Maytag oven (mgs5870adw) isn't getting as hot as it should. The boiler works and all of the burners work. I haven't confirmed my problem other than noticing that things don't cook evenly and/or take way...

mlong9876 - I am having the same problem as you posted re: Maytag (mgs5870adw). I am trying to arrive at the same resolution changing the lower igniter in my same model oven. Were you able to remove the lower oven plate to access the top of the burner and igniter with the convection bake fan housing in the back? I am having difficulty getting to the igniter.

Gas oven model MGS5875BDB comes up to temperature fine but then won't hold the temp. the overn does not restart after it cols a bit. It is the same in bake or convect bake cycle.

Hi, what you describe sounds like a weak igniter. The igniter (which lights the oven burner) doesn't go out all at once and will cause problems like this for a while, then quit working all together. I'd say replacement is the answer. Good luck.

NOTE_ If the ignitor did not appear to function and it is the spark type, it may be out of adjustment which generally requires professional service or it may require replacement.

Oven won't light, even with ignitor getting red

If your oven won't bake, check these:

Bake igniter
Other causes
Bake igniter Usually when an oven won't bake, it's because the bake igniter is weak or burned out. The igniter is a small, round or rectangular device, that's about 1 inch by 4 to 8 inches. It's near the burner itself.

The burner is the tube-type device the gas flows through before it's ignited. It has many small holes on the sides to let the gas, when ignited, form a long, low flame. If the igniter is weak, if it glows red but doesn't get hot enough, or if it's burned out, the gas doesn't flow to the burner and the burner won't ignite. If this is the problem, you may need to replace either the igniter or the gas safety valve. Usually the igniter is to blame.

Other causes Other reasons that your oven may not bake are:

  • The clock settings are incorrect (if you have timed baking or a self-cleaning oven).

  • The thermostat is defective.

  • The safety valve that prevents accidental gas flow is defective.

  • The selector switch is defective.
