Question about Tape Decks

JVC KD-85 Cassette Deck Stops in Seconds in play, REW., & FF

Above noted deck, JVC KD-85 cassette deck, that I purchased brand new in 1980, just recently developed this problem that when I attempt to play a tape, it runs for a few seconds (up to 3 sec.) and then stops as someone hit the stop button.

It has the same issue when rewinding or FF with full load, up to near 1/2 tape capacity.

Also, upon insertion of tape, when the sensor pin is activated, a high pitch, a squeaky high pitch but very low noise can be heard.

All visible components, heads, capstan, pinch roller,...have always been cleaned regularly.

Do I need a new belt, a new motor, ...?

I thank you in advance

The deck will need new belts and idler drives cleaned and serviced, and perhaps some idler tyres replaced. You can get a belt kit from these guys. replacing them is not such a difficult job if you have some mechanical aptitude. Just take it slowly, and focus on getting the transport out of the unit.

it sounds like your tape heads are worn they will strip your cassettes every time and give you very poor sound reproduction it can be repaired but costly to be honest you would be better off with a new deck and it will be cheaper all round.

Hi, My Pioneer CTF-7272 Cassette Deck has stopped playing. Rewind works fine, but FF and Play will run for about 5 seconds and then the tape just stops. Any info on this problem is greaty appreciated....

check the belt whether it is broken or loose. if so replace the belt.
I hope this will solve your issue.
Good luck

Try pushing the eject button while pusshing the power button. Mine was doing the same and that is how I was able to eject the tape.

Problem with deck B on Pioneer CT-W205R

Better tape decks, like Pioneer, may use a different mechanism for record/play than FF & REW. So it sounds like a belt or mechanical link for the REC/PLAY has failed.

Cassette tapes

try firmly banging the cassette onto a table top(with reels flat) a few times, then ff right through and rew a couple of times. this will layer the tape more evenly and hopefully allow the mechanism to play it. the takeup reel or autostop mechanism may be failing if the deck does not have enough torque to carry the tape and may require belts replaced or dried grease removed in the transport.

it has probably thrown the capstan belt and will require a new belt fitted. the transport relies on capstan rotation to engage play. a separate reel motor operates ff/rew and takeup funtions
