Hard to push

Suddenly my Dyson 7 is hard to push. It sucks OK. The roller turns fine. It also squeaks when pushed, which I never noticed before. Any suggestions? Before today I never had any issues. It is about 1 year old.

Since I could not find help on the internet, and you guys only wanted to charge a fee for information (which is fine, by the way, although I declined) I called the toll-free help line I found on the Dyson web site. They walked me through a series of steps to find the problem. Ultimately, I needed to open the cyclone device and clean out the very center of it. I had never read the instruction manual and did not know that I was supposed to clean the center of the cyclone every month. My was very compacted with dust. It was very easy to clean, once I knew to do it. They also had me wash my hepa filter with water and lay it out to dry. I recommend calling the Dyson help line. They were great.

Precision model EL8802...hard to push, sits too low to carpet

An upright cleaner that is in good condition and working properly is always hard to push on loose laid carpet as it is designed to suck the carpet clear of the floor firmly against the mouth of the brush housing. This is so air is drawn through the carpet to aid dust removal and so the brushbar can make full contact with the carpet.

Has too much suction on hard flooring and short pile carpet making it impossible to use

Hi Helen, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC41 is hard to push, it's possible there may be damage to one of the soleplate rollers on the underside of your machine's cleaner head. This could cause it to seal more closely with certain floor types than intended, in turn making the machine harder to push.

With the vacuum switched off and unplugged, check the underside of the cleaner head for any jammed or damaged rollers, including the large central roller in the black section in the middle of the rotating brush bar. In normal use, all of the rollers should be able to rotate freely.

If you do find any damage, just give our experts a call so we can provide further assistance. If a replacement part is needed we can confirm whether this is covered under your Dyson guarantee. You can reach the Dyson Customer Helpline by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

I can't push my Dyson Dc33 on my new works backwards ok but not pushing forward?

Hi Fran, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC33 is engineered to work effectively on both hard and carpeted flooring. The cleaner head is engineered to adjust automatically for different floor types and carpet piles. You can also turn off the brush bar for hard floors and delicate rugs, using the brush control on the cleaner head.
I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty pushing your machine forward on this particular type of new carpeting. If your DC33 worked effectively before the new carpeting was fitted, it doesn't sound like there's an issue with the vacuum itself. However, we'd appreciate the opportunity to take some further details about the issue, and may be able to suggest a resolution. You may also want to consider contacting the carpeting manufacturer directly, as they should be able to recommend the best way of caring for this specific carpeting.

When you have your DC33 easily to hand, please give the Dyson Customer Helpline a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

We'll look forward to speaking with you.

Dyson DC 17 Hard to push on hardwood floor

Hi James, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC17 is difficult to push on hardwood flooring, check the underside of the vacuum - particularly the soleplate - for any damage. Check the small soleplate rollers turn freely and aren't obstructed. If you see any dirt or residue on the soleplate, you can remove this using a damp cloth after turning off and unplugging the vacuum - make sure all parts are completely dry before replacing them.

This should resolve the issue, but if you're concerned that the soleplate is damaged or that the rollers aren't turning freely, please get in touch with our experts directly so we can provide further assistance. You can reach us on 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

Brush bar is not spinning

Common causes of brush roller failure are belt breakage and clogging. If this is a Dyson animal vacuum, you may find the brush roller is so clogged with hair that it cannot rotate. The solution is to remove the brush roller and clean it thoroughly, particularly inside the end caps where hair accumulates. It is unlikely that an entire animal was ingested.

Dyson DC33 model. When trying to vacuum flat rug (no pile), the suction is so high the vacuum head is sucked down hard against the rug, making it impossible to push the cleaner forward. This happens with...

Hi Brad, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty pushing your DC33 on this particular rug. DC33 is a powerful upright vacuum, but we wouldn't normally expect it to be excessively hard to push on any domestic floor surface. However, we may have a tip to resolve this, and we'd value to the chance to discuss this with you directly.

If you can email your contact details and serial number to us at, one of our experts will be in touch as soon as possible.

Best wishes,

When pushing foreward the vacuum is hard to push and if pushed on to hard it will turn over on itself.

Check the brush. That could be the problem. Check the belt also. Your brush roller may need to be lubed or even replaced.

DCo7 too much suction hard to push

This suggests that the bristles on your brush roller are worn out.  When the bristles are a good working length, rotation of the roller actually helps to pull the machine over the carpet. When the bristles wear down this effect is lost.
