If you've upgraded from xp or another earlier version of Windows, you cannot do a recovery. Recovery only works on recovering the present system.
If you have upgraded I would suggest saving off all your important files to a DVD, flash drive or onto another partition and then format and reinstall xp or whatever you had before.

Restore factory settings without disk

when you first power on the machine hit F11 (for most machines) on the keyboard repeatedly until the recovery screen pops up. Click on advanced options, click system recovery, then click OK when prompted. the recovery process will begin and take about 25 minutes on a 5400rpm hard drive. then you must reinstall everything that isn't factory.
NOTE: THIS WILL ERASE ALL DATA THAT ISN'T PREINSTALLED. AFTER THE RECOVERY, YOU MUST INSTALL THE INTERNET SOFTWARE, VIRUS SOFTWARE, ALL UPDATES (THERE'LL BE A LOT!!), AND PERSONAL SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE. BACK UP ALL DATA BEFORE YOU BEGIN. ONCE THE RECOVERY PROCESS STARTS, IT CANNOT BE STOPPED, OR THE SYSTEM WILL GET CORRUPTED. :(
Hopefully this will help.
P.S. Give this recovery process about a day to get it over with. Don't rush it for best results, and use pc decrapifier to remove all the bloatware and trial ware installed by hp on your pc.

How do i reboot my computer to the way it was went window first made it?? erase everything!!

You didn't mention what windows you are using but if you have a backup (may be there when you bought it) then here are some quick links

vista:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-vista/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-Vista

windows 7:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html

or just google "windows system recovery for more information"

Short of that, you would require a reformat/re-installation from disc which is a more complicated procedure.

Hi there, I am having major problems here, I upgraded to windows 7 and it was working fine, then it had a black screen with something about 7600 and windows is not genuine, just this last time that I...

The windows 7 which you were using was a trial version for 30 days or more.It is showing that windows is not genuine because your trial period is over.
Now you have to again format your PC, if you want to use windows 7 trial version then every time you have to format after your windows had expired.
Or just simply format with other operating system.
Thanks.
Have a great day

Changing Vista to XP Pro on a Compaq Presario SR2180NX Desktop PC

SR2180NX has the Vista 32Bit OS from HP. The restore partition will always put Vista 32Bit back on if you use it. Windows XP can only be put on from scratch and I have done it while I still have Vista installed. One problem: there are no XP drivers under SR2180NX webpages. Do your research on the parts that are installed in the 2180 and any other HP machines that have the Windows XP operating system as the OEM OS. But First, check the Intel Site for the 945 chipset drivers (include the SouthBridge, too) under XP. Get them downloaded to a CD and burn the rest of the drivers you find for XP on the same CD. This way, you will have them ready when you are performing the down-grade to windows xp. After you are done with the XP install, you will still have access to the files & work you had done while in Vista. The Vista files are still readable. You might want to consider getting the Windows 7 Professional (not basic) available October 22, 2009. AND you will still have to get the Intel Downloads for Win7 any way, so why not make it a project and make it last for a few years. XP Support stops in 2014.

My computer wont go past the vista start up screen and after about 5 minutes it shows a little blinking cursor in the top left hand corner

  • First try to disconnect printer, external hard drive and other devices from the system excluding monitor, keyboard and mouse then try to start up the system. if the system can boot to windows Vista that way, just reconnect the devices and restart the system. If it has the same problem, you will need to repair the Windows Vista using recovery tools in windows vista recovery environment.

  • You will need the Windows Vista DVD to access this recovery feature of Vista. Check the Discs that HP has provided and check if you have the Disc for Windows Vista. If you do not have it, you can borrow a Windows Vista DVD (Any versions) from a Friend or co worker. If not, just request the Disc from HP Support.

**Note : You will only need two tools under Windows Vista Recovery Environment, that is Startup Reapir and System Restore.

Starup Repair - This will automatically fix errors on the operating system (If this will not work, proceed to system restore)

System restore - You can revert back the system to an earlier date where is was working properly. (No files will be deleted if you this feature)

The link below is a complete step by step of what you need.

Link - Steps for System Restore :

**Note : If the Links will not work, just copy the whole link and paste it to your web browser's address bar. I Suggest that you print the steps so that you can perform the steps with accuracy.
