"ill" stands for illumination, so when you turn your headlights on, the screen dims so that the glare from the screen doesn't distract you at night time. unfortunately pioneer dvd units are renowned for having issues with playing of dvds if they have had a rough time. my first suggestion is to run a dry touch lens cleaner (designed to clean source units and laptop computer lenses) through and see what happens after that, dust is a big deal to these kind of units.

The backlight has gone bad. I have seen this exact problem in SEVERAL other Jensen units.. The backlight might last 5 years, or in extreme cases, maybe 15 minutes.. I have also seen them bad out of the box.
Do you have an ipod module or are you using ibus-to-rca cable to connect your ipod to the D3? In order to control full ipod functions by touch screen you need the ipod module, hence the D3 says ipod control ready not ipod control built in. Let me know so I can pin point the problem.
The problem is likely FU1821 located on side B of the main system board. the part number is CEK1257 cost is about $10, it is a fast blow 2A fuse. Replacing this yourself will require some fairly good soldering skill, as this is a miniature surface mount component, it doesn't just plug in to the board. I ordered mine from partsearch.tigerdirect.com ; but there are several sites that offer this proprietary part, I was able to replace it without incident in about 1 hour using a small soldering iron, forceps (to hold the tiny fuse in place), and a desoldering tool.
