Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

Sears Craftsman 1/2hp Garage Door Opener

When I put power to my Door Opener the motor turns hard to OPEN, reaches a max stress point in the chain/cable and stops there, the motor continues to hum with the rail bent from the pressure. It will not release the pressure and/or return to a CLOSE cycle. Down/Up Force is set to lowest setting.

Any Help?

Thank you lobsterman. You are speaking of the circuit board inside the unit? I see it and I think I can replace it. I imagine it's only available thru Sears. If it proves to be cost-prohibitive to replace this item, which new garage door opener would you recommend I purchase?

    Sincerely,

Thats one of the symptoms of a lightning strike or a power surge. Without actually being there I would suggest replacing the back-board. But as with lightning strikes and power surges sometimes other electronic components could have been damaged as well.

The board comes as a whole unit. If you took the black plastic part off the opener that had 1 white connector (older), 1 small black 1 small white connector (newer) and the wires to the sensors and button off then you've done 50% of the job.

The board costs about $50-75 or so depending where you go. You can get them from Sears but if you have a friendly enough local garage door repair place you can walk in with the board, and if there the least competent, they should have one or should be able to get you one in a reasonable amount of time.

But like I said before a sensor ($25) could have gotten burnt out too or the rpm sensor.

The other thing to check is the gears on the opener. When you take the board off you'll see them, white plastic gear setup, right infront of you, can't miss it (craftsman and some others). If theres white flakes on the bottom of the opener case or burrs on the gears you have little life left in the gears.

So its up to you and how much things cost around you for a new opener. I like liftmaster. But second to that is craftsman. Don't get a screw/worm drive, chain is fine, belt drive is quieter.

Also because you already had a craftsman before all of the brackets and mountings should be the same. Just swap it out.

Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener Model 139.53962SRT1 and am getting 5 error code flashes.

That code is for "RPM sensor or motor overload." Check to see if the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor. If it is, loosen the chain enough to take off the stress and then run the opener until the door closes. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit. Turn this control 2 full turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

I lost power last night due to a storm, I have power however my garage door will not open or close. The motor runs, however it is not grabbing. any ideas on how to fix???

Did you have to pull the emergency release and not return this into position. Pull the cord and move it until it clicks into position. Run the door and it should lock into place. If it does not reach this point. run the door to the open position and push the door back until it locks into the release.

I have a Sears Crafstman Garage door wireless opener. Model 139.53615SR . The door hums but nothing happens. The chain doesn't move. The springs on the door broke last year and i replaced both of them....

My plastic gear stripped soon after a spring broke. I think the broken spring put a huge load on the opener that day and ruined the gear. Replacement wasn't too hard. It will be obvious when you remove the cover if the gear is stripped. Here are instructions:

If the door hits the garage floor and then reverses to the open position you need to adjust the 'down limit' which is on the side of the motor unit. Turn this control in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking will probably be necessary.

Motor runs but door does not open on my craftsman 1/2 h.p. Garage door opener

Remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor and is most likely stripped.

Power shuts down when I try to close or open

Your motor may be working too hard anad ripping the reset button on the garage door,
Try increasing the power on the unit ( should be some type of dial.) or the door may be jamming up somewhere, Try disconnecting the opener from the door and see if it goes up easily, the door might need service

Sears Craftsman Garage door opener does not open or close

The drive gear is most likely stripped. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. The parts number is 41A2817 and is available from Sears or any good door opener service company. It comes with instructions.
