Our vcr just all of the sudden sort of froze up. We have unplugged it and all that happens is that the power button flashes and we can hear what sounds like it is trying to eject the tape. None of the buttons are working.

Has the TV got more than one scart socket? If so try a different one, as some are not designed for VCR playback. Also the scart lead must be fully wired, check that it's not damaged (look at the pins carefully). Scart leads are good at causing all sorts of trouble, so make certain you have a good quality new one connected.
