SOURCE: I have a Denon AVR-3300,

The best audio for any source will always come digitally from the first device in which it appears. The Cable Box would be that device.

Yes, and no. You can connect the HDMI cable from the DVD player to your television for audio and video, but you will not get true surround sound as designed by dolby or dts.

When on 5.1 dvd ther is no sound from rear speakers, but i can run the test tone ok

check to see that the dvd player sound setting is set to BITSTREAM and not pcm. pcm is only 2 channel. Then check to see that the volume setting for the rear speakers in dvd is up, most sony receivers hold different settings for different applications, (vid 1, sat/tv, dvd) and remember when you switch between them. Rear surround should be up all the way , I believe for your receiver that is +10 also make sure you enable the rear speakers in the setup menu for surround sound.

I want to set up my surround sound i need to know what the cable looks like for digital in and video in looks like is it a fiber optic

That is called a TOSLink cable, it is indeed fiber optic. It is for digital audio only, video is carried by HDMI (which also carries digital audio), component video cables, S-video cable, coaxial cable, or RCA jacks.

For your surround sound from a DVD player, connect your digital audio from the DVD to the receiver's input, then the video out from the DVD to the receiver's input. Now the video out from the receiver goes to the TV and the surround sound should now be coming through your speakers. Post again in this thread if you need more help or explanation.

Just hooked up Coax cable; now talking is barely audible

is the center speaker turned up in the reciever speaker settings? each speaker can be adjusted to a level that is higher or lower or all the same as the rest. also is the dolby digital turned on in the reciever settings? and changing the surround sound pre set sounds can also improve the type of audio you are listening to in 6.1 surround sound

DVD player and receiver will not play a dvd in surround sound ?

The dvd player is responsible for reading the surround sound track, and sending it to the receiver. First make sure you are playing the surround sound track on the dvd, many have a stereo track too. Next, try another dvd and see if you can play surround sound on that one. If you can't play surround on ANY dvd I would start looking at the audio connection from dvd to receiver. Are you using an optical cable? Red, white, and yellow RCA cables? Optical will transmit any sound over only one cable, RCA cables need one cable for each channel (LF, C, RF, LR, RR, sub.) If your connections are correct, is the receiver set to play a surround sound track? Is it set in 2 channel mode?
