Rinnai Energysaver 403 FT

We have owned our new home for a year and a half. The heater starts okay but then the lights start flashing and E:20 shows and the heater stops working. Its very frustrating as this is our only source of heat at the moment.

Having the same issue - my Rinaai will shut dfown if I have the settings on low - lights showing that the filter needs cleaning. Have cleaned the external filters and even taken the casing apart and vacumed out the dust. Rinnai have stated that I need to take the heater to a service centre - a college has suggested the gas jets may need cleaning. I'll try that first before paying for the service.

Check the Air Filter, if it needs cleaning the light will flash to notify you on some models.

I may not be much help here in the states but if you have the owners manual you will find a page that will tell you what the error code represents. Not knowing and unable to find the NZ error codes, most likely it represents a flame failure. You will need to remove the front cover and inspect the flame as it starts. If it starts and goes out quickly, you may have debris attached to the flame rod not allowing it to get the proper signal. Or you may have a spider web in your burner. These units are not eazy to repair and I strongly suggest you call a proffessional. Sorry.

Those water heaters are very sensitive to flow rates. The service manual appears to be here: http://rdjxmmyvbu.blogcu.com/rinnai-551f-service-manual/13623970

Hi jmsocr2315,

If my description of what your heater is doing please read through to the end.

The heater is turned on and a room temperature is selected.
You can hear the noise of a small fan start, which shortly after the heater starts.
After a short period of time the heater stops and the red led begins to flash and shuts itself down.

This type of heater has a balanced flue, which means it draws air in one pipe and exhausts it out another.
Have the balanced flue checked for blockages, the problem will most likely be in the flue pipe which draws the outside cool air into the heater and not the flue pipe which blows out the hot air.
it may be full of cob webs or something else which restricts the air flow to the heater.
A service person can perform a quick test to prove the above theory. At the rear of the heater there are two pipes, one is an insulated metal pipe and the other is plastic pipe.
Disconnect the plastic pipe from the flue box and restart the heater.
If the heater runs normally this will confirm that there is a blockage.

Here is a link to the 556FTR from Australia.
They are all pretty much the same. The US site has similar info. Just google Rinnai. Open the site, go to resources tab and click downloads. The manuals are easy to locate.

Where is the pilot light on Rinnai EnergySaver 1001F

If you smell gas in a Rinnai you have a big issue. This heater is what is called a direct vent heater with an electronic ignition so the combustion chamber is sealed and the smell of gas is an indication that you have a gas leak. Please call a professional today.

Check for a blockage in the heat exchanger. Spiders love to make nests in these units. Remove the front cover and the two rectangular viewing ports on the front of the heat exchanger. Watch as the unit ignites. There are three burners you need to watch and the first one is in the center and hard to see. If there is flame but it goes out quickly, you have a blockage in the unit. Check the venting to make sure it is clear of debris.

Rinnai EnergySaver 556F Heater flashes

I'm picking up a faint propane scent when the heater is completely turned off. When I turn the heater on it lights fine so I don't suspect it's the pilot light. Is this an issue with the installation of the fuel line, or could it still be the pilot? Any ideas on troubleshooting the source?

This is a New Zealand model. There is no pilot to relight, the unit will cycle again when you stop and restart the unit. You will need to find out why you are getting this code. I would check out the venting system for blockage. Make sure you are getting gas. You may want to take off the front panel and look into two small rectangular holes covered by small metal plates to see if, in fact the flame is starting then stopping. I have seen many of these with spider webs inside the gas train and burners not allowing the heater to start.

If you can get to the backside of the heater, you will see a rubber hose about 1" (US) in diameter. Remove it from the vent and see if the unit ignites. If it does, this indicates blockage in the outer vent passage.

If not, you may need to contact a technician to investigate your issue.
