When performing a hard reset on the Palm Centro, you hold down the power button as you insert the battery, and then release the power button when you see the second Palm logo. http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/centroupdate/pop_centrohardreset.html

Re: hard reset for palm centro
On my Centro, the manual says to press and hold the up button as you insert the battery, and keep it held until the second palm logo appears and then let up. It will then ask if you want to restore factory settings.

You may need to reset your phone by doing a hard reset. Here is how:
With a hard reset, all records and entries stored in your handheld are
erased, except for the default or specimen databases predefined by the
manufacturer (but see Extended Hard Reset below). Formats
Preferences and other settings are restored to their factory default
settings. You can restore any data previously synchronized with your
computer during the next HotSync operation. If you're running OS 3.1
or earlier, and you're not using a third-party backup utility like
BackupBuddy, you may need to reinstall your third-party applications.
To perform a hard reset:
Hold down the power button on the front panel of the handheld.
holding down the power button, use the reset tip tool (or similar
object without a sharp tip), to gently press the reset button inside the
hole on the back panel of your handheld.
Release the reset button.
When the logo screen appears on the screen, release the power button.
the message appears on the handheld screen warning that you are about
to erase all the data stored on your handheld, press the upper half of
the scroll button on the front panel of the handheld to complete the
hard reset and display the Digitizer screen.
Pressing any other button instead of the upper half of the scroll button will perform a soft reset.
IN PREFERENCES GO TO PERSONAL/BUTTONS THEN AT THE BUTTON LOOK FOR HOTSYNC PRESS IT THEN ON CABLE CHANGE IT TO PHONE; IT MIGHT BE THE PHONE HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE HOTSYNC CABLE CONNECTION. NOW IT DOES GO TO HOT SYNC INSTEAD IT GOES TO PHONE. NOW I'M TRYING TO FIX THE PROBLEM BUT MY PHONE STILL USEFUL. SORRY ABOUT MY ENGLISH
I had the same problem, called Palm and they told me to do a hard reset. Be sure to Hotsync first or you will lose all your media and contacts. To perform a hard reset you must press and hold the red power button, remove the battery (still holding the red power button) wait a few seconds and re insert the battery, wait for the phone to boot back up then you may release the red power button. I tried this and had no luck but that is what Palm suggested. In the end Sprint is sending me a replacement phone for no charge. Hope this helps.
I've had a Centro for 3 months and its such a let-down. Not only does the other caller find that my voice comes and goes randomly during calls but, like you, the battery started playing-up.
You'll find that a hard reset will bring the battery life back up. Hard reset clears EVERYTHING, so backup. To hard reset, remove and replace the battery while holding down the red, drop-call button until you are prompted to hard reset.
You'll find the battery life is bertter again, at least for a couple weeks...
Do a reset. You will lose all items on you device.
Take battery out. Put it in and hold the power button on till you see the palm logo the second time. Release when you see the 2nd logo. It will prompt you for pressing up to delete and reset. Press Up. It will take some time to reset and reformat but please wait.
After that your phone should come to the setup screen. I would hotsync after you setup to get your contacts back.
If you forget the password, the only way to get back in is to perform a "hard reset." Performing a hard reset causes you to loose all data on your phone unfortunately (numbers, texts, and all). Hopefully you've sync-ed up your data on your computer recently.
To perform a hard reset, do the following:
1 - Remove the battery cover.
2 - Take out the battery.
3 - Put the battery back in. An orange Palm logo will appear on your screen.
4 - While the logo is showing, press & hold the Power/End button until a black status bar appears on the screen, fills completely, and then goes away. Then you can stop pressing the button.
5 - Next on your screen will be a prompt to erase all data. Press up to say Yes.
6 - Next select your language and you have an empty phone to start a new. If you've previously sync-ed up your data, you can sync up now and add it all back.
