My computer is not recognizing my canon camera or sd memory card

Although this was helpful advice and it taught me some things I did not know, I still had problems with the computer recognizing the camera. I even called Canon's Tech support and after thirty minutes or so, the Tech realized it was not going to work, he then suggested a card reader. Have not got one yet so I don't know if it willl work.....Stephen

The following is generic in nature, and not specific to your particular camera:

When you connect the camera to the computer, check in the system properties to see if the computer at least knows a new device is connected.

If you see an indication with a question mark and a yellow explation mark or a question mark, disconnect the camera, and then uninstal the unknown device in the system properties.

Then make sure that you first install the camera software before connecting the camera. With some some softwares, the camera must be connected during the installation. It will tell you when to connect the camera. With most, the camera is connected after the installation is complete.

If you connect the camera before installing the software, and the software design does not recomend this, then there will be driver issues when installing the software afterwords. The process to fix this is as I decribed about removing the unknown device, uninstalling, and then re-installing.

Computer won't recognize my camera when I plug it in

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

How can I extract the pictures from the camera memory of my Canon 550D?

You can remove the SD memory card from the Canon camers and insert the SD memory card into an USB memory card reader. Connect the USB memory card reader into the USB port of the working computer. The computer will see this card reader as an external memory device, click on this device and open the folder that contains the photos and you can then copy the photos to your computer.

SD reads Memory error locked in camera and computer will not recognize SD chip. Other SD memory chips are recognized by computer. Have moved lock switch up and down and is not in locked position.

Is it a newer 4GB or larger SDHC card, and are you trying to use it in an older (4 years or older) camera? If so, that's your problem. SDHC format only came out a few years back, and older cameras can not recognize them. You'd need to use 2GB or less standard SD cards only. Fortunately, these are very inexpensive these days, and widely available on Amazon if your local stores no longer carry them.

My computer is not recognizing my PNY SD 1GB memory card. I can still take pictures and my camera saves them to the memory card, but when I try to transfer the pictures to my computer, it does not...

In this instance, you might want to consider either borrowing, or, purchasing and card sd reader. Some computers just don't read these cards from their built-in slots, so, using an sd card reader often fixes the problem.

Hope this helps. :)

My sd card is not recognized in my computer and camera

If neither your computer nor your camera will recognize your card then it is safe to say that there is an issue with the card. You may either have bad contacts or an internal issue, but since your camera states it is locked when you say it is unlocked that would normally signify an internal issue. If you still have a warranty on the card I would suggest you take it back to the place it was purchased from.

Reformatting sd memory card for canon camera an 8gb card and it told me I coudn't print pictures on my HP photosmart 380 series printer unless I reformatted my memory card??

If your camera is indeed an SD200, am sorry to say an 8GB SDHC will not work in this camera. The camera will fail to recognize it, and will do this by giving various problems as you've run into. The overall problem is that the camera was designed before the SDHC format came out (SDHC cards although the exact same in appearance are different in format than standard SD cards). The largest size card that the SD200 will recognize is a 2GB standard SD card.

I recently purchased a Canon DSLR XSi and my computer doesn't recognize it and the printer doesn't recognize the SD card. I have installed the software, but.....

it depends what card you are using-if it's a sdhc card 4 gb or higher some products won't recognize the new high capacity cards-try to find a memory card reader designed for the new cards-sandisk makes them-and the printer if it's older may never support new card and may only work after you download and then send to printer
