Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.
If you are using HDMI cables shouldn't happen. Can you see the picture for the videos on the camera screen? Check the connection and setup on the computer for videos. Make sure your computer supports the kind of videos you are shootiong at the speed it loads on the computer. Trying saving the files on the computer hard drive and then watching it from the computer.
Try pulling the memory card out of camera too see if you can take a picture with out the memory card in place.
If you can do this the memory card is locked. Look at the memory card and find small swith on the side. Look for the lock symbol and be sure the switch is not in the locked position. Move the switch as needed.
Put the card back in and try it. This should solve your problem
