Question about Brother HL 1240 Printer

No 600 DPI with Vista

The HL1240 Vista drivers do not allow for choosing 600DPI, only 150 and 300.

Is there a workaround for this issue that did not exist under XP?

I had the same problem - how to get my HL1240 to print 600x600. Per the user guide, it was limited to 300x300. Then, I found the answer above from Vincent De L?mos ( which is to define the printer as a 1250.
Thank you Vincent!!!!

Here are the steps I used.

***Do NOT uninstall the 1240*** - you are going to use the same port it is assigned but with different drivers. This is how we fool Windows into thinking it is a 1250. If you did uninstall it, then just reinstall it as a 1240 and then follow these directions.

I am using Vista so XP specific options might be different but the method is the same.

My directions assume that the 1240 printer is connected via USB. If not, you will need to change the following slightly, but I expect this will still work.

My directions use " " to specify the name of the selection on the current page.

Here we go:
Control panel - Printers - "Add Printer" (it's at the top of the list of printers) - "Add local printer" - "Use an existing port" (select the USB port that the 1240 is currently using. In my case, it was USB003) - "Install printer driver" (scroll down to select the Brother 1250) - "Use driver that is currently installed" - give it a name. That's it! Print a test page and it should list it as a 1250.

When you print documents, select the 1250 (I made it my default which you set in the printer Properties).

Printer Properties/Preferences - Layout - Advanced shows that it is set at 600x600!

btw - previously, I tried adding the printer as a 1440 since it also supports 600x600 but that didn't work. Even with the Advanced properties set to 600x600, It always printed as if it was in toner saver mode. In fact, printing as a 1240 at 300x300 was sharper than printing as a 1440 at 600x600.

Now, using it as a 1250, I am getting very sharp print; like we deserve!

How do Print a scanned image

This is a complicated issue. You have to understand the computer term DPI, which stands for Dots Per Inch. This applies in three places:
  1. when you scan, you can set this
  2. when you display it on your monitor, your monitor will be usually 72 DPI or 100DPI depending on what resolution your video driver is set to
  3. when you print, it depends what resolution your printer can print at. Your printer can also stretch the image onto the paper by duplicating dots as needed.

Dots = Pixels
In PixWizard, we show you the image size in Dots.

Let's assume you scan at 300 DPI. You scan an 8x10 picture. This is saved as 2400 dots (8" x 300 dots/inch) by 3000 dots (10" x 300). Let's assume your printer is 600DPI. In dots, this is 4800 (8" x 600) by 6000 (10" x 600). For best results, you should scan at 600DPI and set the print options to use a 1:1 scale when printing. Our programs can also stretch the image to fit the entire printable area of your printer.

At 600 dpi my CanoScan LiDE 60 copies on my HP LaserJet 1020 prints an almost all black page - and a very compressed scan copy on one side of the paper. I have reloaded my drivers without success.

I have many years reparing Canon scanners maybe I can help you.

My first question is why are you scanning at 600dpi? 200 to 300 dpi will work just fine for you. When you scan at that high of the dpi the scanner slows down it will operate much faster at a lower dpi. Try scanning at a lower dpi and see if that corrects your problem. Also when you scan at that high your computer has to work harder to convert the image And the image will turn into a megabyte image instead of a kilobyte image and you will be able to store more images at the lower dpi on your hard drive. I hope this helps you out and if it does leave me some feed back.

How can I get a 600 dpi from my brother 1240 under XP-home? The only driver on brother site is one dated 2001. The print quality is not 600 dpi; maybe 300 at best.

This printer is almost 10 years old. The original drivers are for Windows 3.1, 95/98, or NT 4.0. Not sure how XP is handling it.

When you go to print and get the print window, you should be able to select Properties (or Preferences) and there should be either a Quality tab or an Advanced tab.

This is where you should be able to change the resolution to 600X600.

You are not going to get a newer driver for this because of the age, but you still should be able to get 600 DPI out of it.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Ld unit problem. This code can be very frustrating, as it can be triggered by several things -top right door switches shorting out, toner on the LD unit board, laser synch board problem, bad connection between the BICU and the LD unit, etc.
The bottom line is, if you're not a technician, you will need one to solve this error.
Make sure to always perform the LD pitch adjustment (both 400 and 600dpi) after doing any service to the laser unit.

Sorry, there is no Vista Drivers available for your printer. They must come from the Manufacturer - and Mustek has chosen not to support your printer with drivers.

Thanks for using FixYa!!
