Her machine may have a hidden partition on the hard drive that will restore the system to factory condition, without wiping out her data. Read the following carefully (PDF document).

Starts on page 16 of the PDF.

Look at "Standard Recovery" and "Recovery Image" (page 17)

Page 20 has "Starting PC Recovery if the PC is not responding".

Says it has internet connection, but won't load webpages

1. Try booting up your computer in 'safe mode with networking' and check if the web pages are loading. If so, the problem might be with the firewall on the computer.(Make sure that you have connected the laptop wired onto the modem/router before going into safe mode. You can go into 'safe mode with networking' by continuously tapping the F8 key just as soon as you press the power button)

If it does not work try this:

2. Open up command prompt (start>Run>cmd in win xp or else for vista and win 7 click Start>type in cmd in the 'start search' box and right click on cmd.exe on the top and select 'run as administrator' ;click on yes or continue in the next box )

3. type in the following commands:
Hit the Enter key after typing in each command

ipconfig /flushdns
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset

restart your computer. see if it works. reply if it doesn't.

Won't boot - brief blue screen

Press F8 while booting but before it goes into SAFE mode select "Temporarily disable restart." Now you should be able to read the Blue Screen. If this doesn't work it's likely you have the GenericFX virus and you'll need to repair the operating system.

Try to start in safe mode, then change the start up options so that the computer does not reboot on error. Then you can see what the BSOD (stop error) message is and troubleshoot from there.

Start up

try starting the computer normally, this usually happens if you computers power was cut while booting up, its just a small harmless glitch.  As for the returning back to the prompt try running it with command prompt. when you get to the command prompt, type (chkdsk) and let it run this might also fix any other problems that you are not seeing.
