In the cse of your unit it is much more cost effective to replace it than to fix the screen. A new one would run around 110$ where the repair would cost you 120$. So i would recommend upgrading to a newer unit.
... but local NJ directions are working? You may only have a New Jersey map installed. If that's the problem, you can solve it by going to Garmin's web site, http://www.garmin.com/ and buying a map of North America. You'll need to connect your Garmin to your computer with a USB cable. These map files are very, very large, so expect it to take several hours to download and install the new maps even over a fast internet connection.
More than likely they broke off due to corrosion. Are these the power pins? You can send it to either garmin and pay a flat rate fee, or to Mid-Shore Electronics in Ocean City, MD. 410-228-7335. I hear they do pretty good work.
Sounds like the screen is shot and theres nothing really you can do to fix it, sorry :(
You can send it to Garmin for the flat rate repair fee of $79 dollars. I would recommend getting the new eTrex Legend H with the high sensitivity receiver if you want a similar model. It's sat reception will blow the prior version out of the water and has 24mb of memory rather than the 8mb it used to have.
Garmin will replace the screen for a fee. Mine broke when the suction cup mount came loose and it hit the gear shift. To be clear, it was the touch sensitive "grid" that broke on mine, and not the actual display part. The Garmin support person put my repair in as a "no charge", and they did it for me for free.
